Introduction

PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION FOR:   SCHOOL GROUNDS MAINTAINER (High School)

This examination is open to permanent classified employees of the City of Waterbury Individuals appointed as a result of passing the examination shall be required to serve a working test period which will be, in effect, the final phase of this examination. A passing score must be obtained on each part of the examination.

SALARY:  $25.09~ $31.74/hourly

1.  Appeal Process- An applicant may appeal notice of not meeting the minimum qualifications (Civil Service Rules and Regulations, Section 3741, Subsection B, Article 9) to the Civil Service Commission within seven (7) days of the date on such notice. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the care, upkeep, and maintenance of school grounds, athletic fields, landscaped areas, and exterior facilities at assigned high school complexes. Responsible for ensuring that all exterior areas are safe, clean, and properly maintained for student and community use.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

(Illustrative only)

Performs routine and seasonal grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, edging, seeding, fertilizing, and aerating turf areas.

Prepares and maintains athletic fields, including lining, raking, watering, rolling, and grooming in accordance with seasonal schedules and sports requirements.

Installs, repairs, and maintains irrigation systems, hoses, and sprinklers.

Plants, prunes, trims, and removes trees, shrubs, and flowers.

Operates and maintains exterior equipment such as lawn mowers, tractors, weed trimmers, aerators, snow blowers, and utility vehicles.

Performs minor repairs and maintenance on exterior equipment.

Maintains school exterior walkways, courtyards, and parking areas free of litter, debris, and safety hazards.

Assists with snow removal, sanding, and salting during winter months.

Performs grounds-related pest control, leaf removal, mulching, and storm clean-up as required.

Maintains playground surfaces and exterior recreational areas.

Keeps records of work performed, equipment usage, and materials applied.

Assists with set-up and clean-up for outdoor school and community events.

Performs other related duties as required.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Good knowledge of modern methods and practices of turf care, landscaping, and athletic field preparation.

Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of irrigation systems.

Skill in safe and proper operation of light and heavy grounds equipment.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Ability to identify and correct grounds-related safety hazards.

Ability to work independently and organize daily assignments effectively.

Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.

Good physical condition, reliability, and initiative.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school or equivalent. Two (2) years of experience in landscaping, turf maintenance, or related grounds keeping work, preferably in a school, park, or athletic facility setting.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT

Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut driver’s license with a good driving record. Must be available for overtime and emergency call-ins for weather-related or seasonal work.

Employees appointed to positions in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. A physical examination may be required.

SPECIAL NOTE

This position is covered under the written agreement between the City of Waterbury and the Waterbury City Employees Local 353, AFSCME.
