Introduction

PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION FOR:   CARPENTER MASONRY FOREPERSON

This examination is open to permanent classified employees of the City of Waterbury Individuals appointed as a result of passing the examination shall be required to serve a working test period which will be, in effect, the final phase of this examination. A passing score must be obtained on each part of the examination.

SALARY:  $29.25 ~ $36.47/hourly

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Performs and supervises carpentry and mason maintenance work. Exercises responsibility for maintenance and repair of masonry structures and carpentry projects in and on school buildings and grounds. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Direct and supervise skilled carpenters and masons in the performance of skilled carpentry, woodworking and millwork requiring installation, maintenance and repair;
  • Direct and supervise masonry work, including the repair and replacement of walls, steps, sidewalks, curbing, chimneys, utility structure and footings at all School buildings and properties;
  • Performs highly skilled carpentry and masonry tasks in accordance with standard trade practices;
  • Prepares records and reports and maintains necessary records required by School Inspector’s Office;
  • May work with school project or construction contractors;
  • Perform alterations, repairs and maintenance of structures and facilities;
  • Perform skilled bench work, operating with equipment including, but not limited to, power saws, jointers, wood lathes, planers, boring, sanding and mortising machines;
  • Order supplies and ensure all materials for projects are ordered in accordance with the protocols set forth by the School Inspector’s Office;
  • Manage and mentor carpenters and masons working for the Waterbury Department of Education;
  • Manage crew schedules and monitor attendance of assigned crew;
  • Provide project updates to School Inspector or his/her designee as required;
  • Coordinate and collaborate with licensed trades forepersons and supervisors in the School Inspector’s Office;
  • Ensure manpower and resources are adequate, and work with School Inspector’s Office to order supplies;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and practices of the carpentry and masonry trades;
  • Knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trades;
  • Ability to estimate time and materials needed;
  • Ability to lay out work for self and others;
  • Ability to operate woodworking machinery as well as operate masonry machinery;
  • Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records;
  • Ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions; 
  • Strong Interpersonal skills;
  • Good oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to utilize computer software;
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades;
  • Skilled in the care and use of tools and equipment of the mason and carpentry trades;
  • Ability to travel between office and jobsites;
  • Ability to prioritize work orders and work projects

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

High School Diploma or GED. Eight (8) years of experience in the construction trades.
Four (4) years of the general experience must have been performing skilled trade functions in the carpentry and/or masonry.

Substitutions Allowed 
1. Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in carpentry or masonry may be substituted for two (2) years of the general experience. 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT

Incumbents in this class are required to possess a current Motor Vehicle Class D Operator License and have a good driving record

Employees appointed to positions in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. A physical examination may be required. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and to risk of injury from equipment.

The City may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
