This examination is open to permanent classified employees of the City of Waterbury

This examination is open to permanent classified employees of the City of Waterbury.  Individuals appointed as a result of passing the examination shall be required to serve a working test period which will be, in effect, the final phase of this examination. A passing score must be obtained on each part of the examination.

Seniority Points – Credit for this position will be in accordance with the amendment of the Civil Service Rules & Regulations.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  

A Fire Lieutenant is in command at the scene of a fire (or other incident) until a superior officer arrives. A Fire Lieutenant leads in the performance of physical tasks involved in firefighting and has a high degree of responsibility for the protection of life and property. Work is carried out according to department guidelines with some latitude for the exercise of independent judgment. Responsible for all administrative function of a particular company.



EXAMPLES OF WORK

(Illustrative only)  

Directs the activities of a fire company in its quarters, its travel to and from a fire (or other incident), and its operation at the scene of a fire, EMS, or other incident;  Commands operations at scene of fire or other emergency until relieved by a superior officer; Conducts company drills on modern firefighting methods, maintains records, makes reports and requisitions supplies; Supervises the inspection of apparatus and equipment for correct working order; Supervises the cleaning, checking and replacement of tools and equipment following a fire;  On assignment to the Director of Training, assists in the administration of the department training program; Participates in public fire education activities such as fire prevention and education demonstrations; speaking before groups, etc.  Does other related work as required; Must be capable of performing the essential functions of a Firefighter, as specified in the current Firefighter job specification. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Meets or exceeds all qualifications of a Firefighter. Good knowledge of modern firefighting equipment and methods; considerable knowledge of the geography of the City, ability to plan and lay out work for subordinates and to maintain discipline; ability to recognize fire hazards; ability to judge what equipment is needed for every type of fire and if help is needed; ability to perform physical aspects of the position; good oral and written communication skills; ability to produce reports.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION YOU MUST INDICATE ON YOUR APPLICATION THAT AS OF THE CLOSING DATE YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING EXPERIENCE (OR WILL HAVE IT WITHIN SIX MONTHS:):    

Four (4) years firefighting experience with the City of Waterbury Fire Department. Course work in firefighting technology desirable.

 Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate weights. A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.
