The primary function of a police
matron is to conduct searches, monitor and document the activity of female
prisoners upon their arrival and in custody stay at the Waterbury Police
Department. Police matrons are
responsible for maintaining the custody, safety, and well-being of a group of
inmates. When time permits, police
matron will assist the Waterbury Police Department’s sworn personnel with the
booking process and additional administrative task.
Monitors surveillance cameras of the female and juvenile cell blocks;
Searches female prisoners and is
present when they are processed; Assist Digitally and manually fingerprint female and juvenile
prisoners. Assist in the prisoner booking process involving females and
Juveniles. Patrols designated cell blocks or other prison
quarters to ensure
the safety and well-being
of female and juvenile prisoners and
that there are no security breaches; Inspects
and tests cell bars,
locks and partitions to make sure that they are in proper working order and immediately reports
any security breaches or equipment problems to the Desk Sergeant and/or
Administrative Lieutenant; Supervises visits
to female and juvenile prisoners; Takes
counts of female and juvenile prisoners at prescribed periods; Maintains a daily log book
and other records
as determined by the Chief
of Police or his/her
designee; Complete administrative task that may require,
but not limited to following; typing, documenting, recording, reviewing and/ or auditing. Complete incident reports
on non-police related
matters as deemed by sworn immediate supervisor.
Preferably some knowledge of modern
practices relating to the guarding
of prison inmates; ability to control women;
firmness; sympathetic understanding of delinquents
and of correctional problems; willingness to work in a secure,
institutionalized environment;
good physical condition. Successfully complete
Collect/ NCIC training
and maintain annual certification.

Completion of a High School Diploma or GED.
Police, Military, or experience working in a correction type facility is preferred, but not required.

Incumbents in this class must have general good
health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or
usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina,
agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the
duties of the class. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate
weights; may be exposed to some risk of injury from kitchen equipment and from
students. A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance
screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of

This position is covered under the written agreement between the
City of Waterbury and the Waterbury City Employees Local 353, AFSCME. The Parts
and Weights for this examination will be determined prior to conducting the
exam. Individuals appointed shall be required to serve a working test period
which will be, in effect, the final phase of the examination.
Appeal
Process- An applicant may appeal notice of not meeting the minimum
qualifications (Civil Service Rules and Regulations, Section 3741, Subsection
B, Article 9) to the Civil Service Commission within seven (7) days of
the date on such notice.
