Introduction

OPEN COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION FOR: GENERAL UTILITY MECHANIC

SALARY: $25.96 ~ $33.09/Hour (NOTE: NEW HIRES START AT THE BEGINNING OF RANGE)

IMPORTANT:
 

1. Veterans – Veteran’s points will be awarded in accordance with the Connecticut State Statute. Five (5) for non-disabled veterans, ten (10) for disabled veterans. Proper documentation must be submitted to the Personnel Director before the date of the examination.

2. Residents – Five (5) Residency points shall be added in accordance with the amendment to the Civil Service Ordinances for Maintainer I position dated August 21, 2017. Proper documentation and proof of residence must be submitted no later than the closing date for applications.

3. Appeal Process- An applicant may appeal notice of not meeting the minimum qualifications (Civil Service Rules and Regulations, Section 3741, Subsection B, Article 9) to the Civil Service Commission within seven (7) days of the date on such notice. Please notify the Civil Service Office of a change in address. Notification will be mailed to the address written on your application.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Performs routine general maintenance mechanic work.

Employee performs work involving the routine repair and maintenance building equipment or other repair and maintenance not normally repaired and maintained by Trades. Work is performed under the supervision of a HVAC Foreman or other Building Trades Foreperson.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Inspects, repairs, services, and maintains functional parts of mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps, generators, compressor, specialized grass mowers and snow blowers;

Runs equipment and machinery to test its functioning, use various tools and diagnostic equipment to ascertain malfunctions;

Troubleshooting HVAC, performing routine preventative maintenance and assigned work orders (if applicable); 

Maintaining a schedule for inspecting, servicing, and testing school equipment (exhaust fans, fume hoods, boilers, HVAC units etc.);

Operating a variety of hand and power tools; Maintaining a clean and organized work area;

Complying with health and safety regulations;

Performing general maintenance work on buildings as assigned or work along the trades present in your assigned properties;

Checking and responding to security and safety issues;

Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair equipment breakdowns involving mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic components;

Monitor equipment performance and makes adjustments as required or requested;

Tear down equipment, rebuild and replace defective parts and component units such as motors, gear boxes, clutches, bearings and electrical units as needed; Assist outside contractors on on-site projects;

Participate in show removal process;

Perform other related duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Good knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines and electric motors as pertinent to the repair, maintenance and servicing of pumps, generators, compressors, snow blowers, specialized grass mowers and other types of equipment and machinery in this capacity; 

Ability to use hand tools and mechanical, electrical and diagnostic equipment; 

Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 

Ability to work long hours under emergency conditions, such as snow removal. 

Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Two (2) years of actual employment experience inspecting, repairing, servicing, and maintaining mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps, generators, compressors, snow blowers, building equipment or specialized park or golf course equipment.

One year of employment experience may be substituted with graduation or certifications from a mechanical, building, construction or similar trade school or vocational education, training or certification. Completion of High School or a G.E.D.

Must possess a valid State license with a good driving history.

SPECIAL NOTE

This position is covered under the written agreement between the City of Waterbury and the Waterbury City Employees Local 353, AFSCME.

The Parts and Weights for this examination will be determined prior to conducting the exam. Individuals appointed shall be required to serve a working test period which will be, in effect, the final phase of the examination.
