PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This seasonal position will directly support the City of New Haven’s Parks Department and its peak season operations. The work will require evening and weekend hours, and will be under the direct supervision of Parks Dept. Full-Time Parks Administrative staff, Parks Maintenance staff, as well as Senior Seasonal staff and under the programmatic supervision of the Parks Dept.

These employees are responsible for working with Park staff as assigned in the following areas:
  • To manage the daily front gate operations at Lighthouse Point Park, providing excellent customer service and processing vehicle and vessel passes and permits
  • To monitor daily picnic permit schedules at Lighthouse Point Park and other parks as assigned and communicate any issues that may arise to the Parks Dept.
Seasonal position, up to 40 hours per week, not to exceed 120 calendar days.

Hours of operation for Lighthouse Park are typically sunrise to sunset. As such, hours of work will vary, and shifts will include early mornings, evenings, holidays, and weekends.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Gate Attendants arrive on time to support Lighthouse Point Park Gate and Lighthouse Parks Dept. Facility Seasonal operations, providing excellent customer service for all visitors to the park.
  • Process payment for all day passes and/or vehicle/vessel stickers and guiding access to the park, as well as monitoring all picnic areas and splash pad areas as directed by Supervisors.
  • Assists in helping set up all equipment and materials needed for the Lighthouse Point Park Gate operations program.
  • Assists with daily tasks such as monitoring the Lighthouse front gate, review of vehicle registrations, attendance and visitor tracking, record and schedule keeping, and all other necessary front gate functions.
  • Assists in supervision of and participates in the program team for Parks Dept. activities throughout the season.
  • Communicates well with all park visitors and program staff.
  • Assists with maintaining access, cleanliness, and orderliness of all park areas and equipment.
  • Represents the department at citywide and community events, meetings, and facilities.
  • Follows safety guidelines and protocols established by the department.
  • Perform related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Recent high school graduate, college student, or recent college graduate.
  • Some experience (preferably at least one season or semester) in customer service.
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Previous experience working with the public, comfortable with working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • A working knowledge of parks and outdoor permitted activities.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment with shared goals.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to act as cashier for gate transactions.
  • Ability to use basic tools and follow instructions.
  • Ability to support delivery of programs for park visitors.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups interested in parks.
  • Ability to accurately enter records and information for Department programs.
  • Effective planning, prioritization, and organizational skills with ability to execute multiple tasks.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, as programming shall include evening and weekend schedules.
  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred) desired but not required.
  • A valid driver’s license is preferred but not required.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including rain and temperature fluctuations.
  • Agility and physical fitness to be mobile and stand for extended periods of time.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund, "Non Tested" position.

This seasonal position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, holiday, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of seasonal employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. 

Employment Status and Limitations

  • Seasonal employment is limited to a maximum of 119 calendar days per appointment. Seasonal employees may work up to 40 hours per week during this period.
  • Returning seasonal employees are not eligible for reappointment to a seasonal position until one (1) year plus one (1) day has elapsed from the start date of their most recent seasonal appointment. Example: An employee whose seasonal appointment began on June 1, 2025 may not return to seasonal employment until June 2, 2026.
  • Seasonal employees may transition to part-time employment only after a minimum break in service of thirteen (13) consecutive weeks.
  • Part-time employees may transition to seasonal employment only after a minimum break in service of thirteen (13) consecutive weeks.
  • Individuals may not hold two concurrent positions with the City of New Haven and/or the Board of Education at the same time, except for ten (10)-month employees:
    • Current full-time ten (10)-month employees may work only during July and August in either a seasonal or part-time position.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, and (2) a pre-employment drug screening in accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy* for candidates aged 18 and up.
