Introduction

This is a temporary skilled labor position in any of the following trade areas: electrical repair and maintenance, mechanical repair and maintenance, plumbing repair and maintenance, carpentry and construction projects, turf management, athletic field restoration, and facility development projects.

Work involves responsibility for performing skilled tasks in accordance with standard practices of the trade. Work may require independent judgment depending on the specific assignment area. Assignments are received in the form of oral and written instructions, and frequently accompanied by sketches or blueprints. Work is reviewed by a supervisor for compliance with specifications and standards.

Up to 40 hours per week; hours generally follow a 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. schedule, but may include other shifts depending on assignment.

Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 days. Various assignments; rate of pay determined by experience and assignment.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is a temporary skilled labor position in any of the following trade areas: electrical repair and maintenance, mechanical repair and maintenance, plumbing repair and maintenance, carpentry and construction projects, turf management, athletic field restoration, and facility renovation / repair projects.

Work involves responsibility for performing skilled tasks in accordance with standard practices of the trade. Work may require independent judgment depending on the specific assignment area. Assignments are received in the form of oral and written instructions and frequently accompanied by drawings, sketches, and/or construction details/plans. Work is reviewed by a supervisor for compliance with specifications and standards.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Depending on the specific assignment area:
  • Installs athletic fields and/or performs renovation of sod, seedbeds, athletic field areas, and other specialized landscaping projects as may be needed.
  • Repairs mechanical equipment including small engines, performs welding repair and fabrication, as well as assists with fence / guardrail repair.
  • Performs routine equipment and vehicle maintenance.
  • Operates equipment such as hand tools, circular saw, welding torches, top dressing machine, turf maintenance equipment, drill press, blade sharpener, and other tools of the trades.
  • Performs building construction-type tasks such as assisting with playground maintenance and repair, roof and gutter repair, installation of doors and windows, and other regular maintenance as assigned.
  • Performs service and repair of electrical systems.
  • Performs plumbing and AC/heating service and repair.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or equivalent; and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in any of the trade areas named above, or completion of an approved apprenticeship. General construction ability is mandatory.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the particular trade area.
  • Must have basic, broad construction skills and be able to perform common construction-related tasks safely and competently.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Skill in the use of tools, materials, and equipment common to the trade.
  • Ability to perform tasks without close supervision.
  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions and to keep simple records.
  • Ability to understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work from sketches and plans.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a work crew, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and coworkers.
Note: Specific licenses such as welding, CDL, journeymen’s license, pesticide applicator’s license and other licenses related to the trade areas named above are preferred.

  • Possession of and ability to maintain a State of Connecticut Driver’s License.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund, "Non Tested" position.

This seasonal position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, holiday, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of seasonal employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time. Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 calendar days.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, and (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*.
