PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is highly skilled work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and all types of park maintenance equipment.

Work involves responsibility for the performance of skilled tasks in repairing a wide variety of equipment. Work includes the repair of automotive, landscaping and road maintenance equipment and requires the exercise of independent judgment concerning the method of repair based on oral or written work orders setting forth a complaint with respect to the operating condition of a piece of equipment. General supervision is exercised by a supervisor who may test results during work or after completion.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Repairs and overhauls automobiles, trucks, power shovels, tractors, air compressors, bulldozers, cement mixers, graders, mowers, stump grinders, and other equipment.
  • Rebuilds and tunes engines using testing equipment; grinds valves, and sets tappets; replaces or repairs main connecting rod bearings; inspects and repairs transmissions, universal joints and differentials; relines and adjusts brakes.
  • Rebuilds, repairs, and installs electrical automotive apparatus such as starters, generators, distributors, electrical windshield wipers, and voltage regulators.
  • Evaluates condition of radiators; locates faults or defects and makes necessary repairs; rebuilds and repairs damaged or defective radiators; solders leaks; straightens damaged or bent parts; installs new cords; assembles and tests repaired radiators.
  • Repairs hydraulic systems on construction equipment.
  • Does simple oxy-acetylene and electric welding or blacksmithing.
  • Prepares records and reports on work accomplished including daily equipment repair logs.
  • Performs skilled mechanical work and preventive maintenance on all equipment as prescribed or instructed, including greasing, washing, tire rotation, etc.
  • Responsible for cleaning up personal work areas, such as returning tools and equipment to their designated places and maintaining tidy workspaces in the Parks Maintenance garage, shop, and equipment yard.
  • Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school; three to five years of experience in the field of automotive and heavy equipment mechanics including small engine and motorized power equipment service; or any equivalent combination of certifications, education, training, and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.
  • Knowledge of Park Department equipment such as large and small grass-cutting equipment, sprayers, beachcombers, cement mixers, trackless sidewalk machines, plows and sanders, snow thrower equipment, skid steers.
  • Ability to diagnose troubles in automotive equipment,
  • Ability to perform maintenance and repair of light and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to follow automotive and equipment diagrams.
  • Skill and care in the use of tools, machines, and testing instruments of the trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

  • Must possess a valid Connecticut Driver’s License.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a "General Fund," tested position.

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 128, UPSEU.

General Funded hires into this class shall not be covered by Social Security but rather the City pension, contributing 9% of salary.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*, and (3) a 120-day probationary period.
