In this role, you'll lead high-level administrative and professional endeavors, shaping the visual identity of our city through meticulous planning, design, and execution of landscaping projects across various departments and agencies. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is high-level administrative and professional work in landscape architecture. Work involves planning and site design and the execution of bid drawings and documents for landscaping for all departments and agencies of the city government. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Parks & Trees with latitude for the exercise or independent professional judgment and is reviewed through conferences with the City Engineer the City Plan Department and the Director of Parks, and evaluation of results.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides consultation, design, and development services in connection with the arrangement of structures, circulation systems, recreation, and parking facilities, ground and water forms, plant materials, and other elements of land planning.
  • Develops programs; prepares feasibility studies and master plans; assists in site evaluation and selection; prepares environmental impact statements.
  • Prepares detailed designs and construction drawings, contract documents, bid documents, technical specifications, cost analyses and estimates; assists in contract supervision, construction supervision and payment cost controls.
  • Attends meetings and hearings, and makes oral, written, and graphic presentations to department heads, officials, and the public.
  • Reviews site plans and drafts design reports for other city projects including those submitted to the City Plan Commission for its review and approval.
  • Supervises work of landscape design consultants.
  • Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a four-year college or university supplemented by a graduate level degree in landscape architecture; and 5 to 10 years of experience in landscape architecture, including supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Connecticut landscape architecture license.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape architecture.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape architecture techniques to public grounds and parks, institutional, industrial, commercial, and residential complexes; streets, highway and parkway development, urban development and redevelopment; conservation and resource planning; and problems of municipal, metropolitan, and state planning.
  • Ability to make judgments regarding community value, potential positive and negative impacts, design alternatives and the realities of accomplishing landscape architecture ends within budget and legal structures.
  • Ability to prepare clear written informational and interpretive reports and other illustrative materials within a restricted timeframe.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, drawings, and diagrams, including knowledge of computer-aided drafting and design practices.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others, including consultants.
  • Knowledge of construction management practices and documents.
  • Knowledge of public bidding procedures and estimating procedures.
  • Skill in drawing and drafting.
  • Proficient in GIS, AutoCAD, and other computer-aided design.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Landscape architect license in the state of Connecticut.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a Capital Fund, "Non-Tested" position. 

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

Special & Capital Funded employees shall not be covered by the City pension but shall continue to be covered by Social Security.
