PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is heavy manual work in collecting garbage and refuse. Work involves performing heavy manual work in the collection of garbage, refuse, and trash on residential routes. Work is performed as a member of a crew under close supervision.

Work is typically 40 hours per week, with a 5:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. shift.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Picks up and carries medium to large-sized containers in front of houses on an established route; picks up trash in other areas as directed.
  • Dumps container into truck, ensuring that all refuse is deposited in the truck; cleans area around truck and container; returns empty container to its proper place.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Any combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
  • Some knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions of the work.
  • Some knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of garbage trucks.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and other employees, and to deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and tactful manner.
  • Physical strength sufficient, to lift and carry heavy objects over a long distance under adverse weather conditions.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Persons with a job required CDL are subject to random drug screenings, and must meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements. This may include registering with the Clearinghouse and consenting for the City to perform a limited and/or full query as defined by the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS

Requires the ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions, in and around vehicular traffic.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a "General Fund," non-tested position.

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 34, United Public Service Employees Union.

Hires into this class shall not be covered by Social Security but instead will contribute 9% of pay to the City pension.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening in accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*, and (3) a 120-day probationary period. Instructions and information on this pre-employment process are included in Conditional Offer of Employment.
