As the Senior Accountant, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining the financial health and transparency of our city by meticulously managing and preparing financial records, reports, and statements. Your contributions will directly impact informed decision-making processes for city officials and stakeholders. Additionally, you may utilize your expertise in forecasting techniques to project future revenues, expenditures, and cash flows, providing valuable insights for strategic planning.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is highly responsible accounting and supervisory work involving responsibility for one or more major accounting functions with the Controller’s Office or assigned department. This specific assignment is within the Economic Development Administration.
Work involves the maintenance and preparation of financial records, reports, and final financial statements. Work is performed with independent judgement, and is reviewed for compliance with accepted accounting standards, applicable rules, regulations and statutes.
Hybrid remote work options for some aspects of the work may be available once work routine are established.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintains required financial records, including general and subsidiary ledgers, and journals for one or more funds and account groups.
- Prepares a variety of financial reports and statements including reports on cash disbursements and receipts, comparative revenue, and revenue or expenditure forecasts.
- May manage the City’s investment program through the identification of idle City funds, working with banks to obtain maximum interest rates, and recording of transactions relating thereto.
- Schedules, assigns, and reviews the work of a unit engaged in the maintenance and processing of a variety of financial documents including general and/or subsidiary expenditure or revenue ledgers, by checking work in progress and resolving problems in the maintenance of schedules and standards; makes progress reports on status of work.
- Develops and maintains a variety of financial schedules, such as cash budgets, and payments of debt principal and interest.
- Maintains accounts receivable records.
- Compiles and analyzes data for various financial reports.
- Supervises subordinate employees.
- Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in accounting and at least 7 to 10 years experience in accounting involving the analysis and recording of financial transactions, and the preparation of financial reports; and 3 to 5 years in a supervisory capacity; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Extensive knowledge of the principles of governmental accounting
- Extensive knowledge of the principles of account classification
- Considerable knowledge of accounting theory and its application to accounting transaction, particularly not-for-profit accounting
- Ability to analyze and reconcile computer generated reports
- Ability to plan, schedule and review the work of subordinate employees
- Ability to prepare financial reports on findings and recommendations
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with city officials, employees, and the general public
- Ability to develop a working knowledge of laws, ordinances and regulations governing the financial operations of the city
SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a General Fund, "Tested" position.
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*, and (3) a 90-day probationary period.
