PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

As a part of the school health care team, services provided by our athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

The Athletic Trainer will evaluate New Haven student athletes’ conditions, injuries, and illnesses, conduct diagnostic tests, exercises and communicate the results with medical professionals as needed. Athletic Trainers work with medical professionals, coaches, and student athletes to ensure that players are ready to play and receive proper treatment in the event of illness or injury.

Position reports to the New Haven Board of Education Athletic Director.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attends a variety of New Haven School District sports events to provide needed on-site care for student athletes in grades 5-12.
  • Conducts athlete intake assessments.
  • Maintains records relating to athlete condition and training, treatment plans.
  • Attends annual conferences and weekly staff meetings.
  • Develops customized treatment plans for athletes.
  • Makes appropriate recommendations for ideal steps in athlete care.
  • Designs rehabilitation and training programs for athletes.
  • Works with coaches, athletes, and medical professionals to evaluate players’ condition.
  • Speaks to coaches, family members, and athletes to set health and treatment goals.
  • Uses knowledge of sports-related injuries to diagnose and treat athletes.
  • Refers athletes to another doctor or other medical staff members as needed.
  • Assists and monitors injured players as they heal and progress towards recovery.
  • Handles clerical tasks such as assisting with medical budgets, restocking supplies, and maintaining inventory.
  • Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree and Graduate Athletic Trainer Internship Program, NATA (BOC) Athletic Trainer. One to three years' experience as an Athletic Trainer; previous experience in a diverse midsize school district setting desirable. Must have all certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED.

  • Ability to perform prevention, assessment, treatment (including first aid), reconditioning and general rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
  • Strong understanding of the challenges athletes face, proper nutrition, sports injuries, and treatment options.
  • Ability to perform in high-stress situations.
  • Ability to work in a diverse and multicultural school district.
  • Understanding of first-aid treatments, physical therapy techniques and equipment.
  • Detail-oriented, analytical, and attentive.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, empathy, and compassion.
  • Excellent problem solving, decision making, and communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with record-keeping practices.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in health-related field with NATA BOC Certification.
  • Graduate of National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA).
  • Licensed or license eligible in Physician Assistant as an Athletic Trainer.
  • BLS 2 Year Experience and entry-level graduate with NATA BOC Certification will be considered.
  • Must have flexibility to work sports events outside of a traditional Monday – Friday 9-5 work schedule, to meet the operational needs of New Haven School District sports programming.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund, "Tested" position. 

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; the salary is within Local 3144, Range 9.

General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*, and (3) a 90-day probationary period.
