PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is highly skilled technical work in the maintenance and repair of fire automotive property and related equipment. Work involves responsibility for the performance of maintenance work on Fire Department vehicles, and is performed under the general supervision of the Office of the Chief or designee.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Repairs and refills dry powder extinguishers and Scott bottles; repairs hydrants, tools and equipment.
- Changes flat tires, assists the supervisor of motor apparatus in the repair of damaged vehicles and apparatus, changes oil, oil filters and air filters; checks and makes general fluid changes, and general lubrication.
- Rebuilds and/or repairs generators, alternators, fuel pumps, carburetors and windshield wipers.
- Installs and repairs overhead warning signals, sirens and other special emergency/warning equipment.
- Welds apparatus, equipment and hydrants as needed. Also welds parts onto vehicles.
- Straightens, aligns and repairs or replaces damaged body parts such as fenders, seat tracks, window regulators, bumpers, tail-light and head light assemblies, radiators, door handles, doors, hoods and trunk lids.
- Performs other related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school and 3 to 5 years of experience at the trade or journey level as a heavy duty Diesel Truck and Automotive Mechanic; Or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills.
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade, especially of the type of engines used by the fire departments.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Considerable knowledge of automotive and equipment electrical systems.
- Knowledge of fire apparatus electrical systems, fire apparatus pumps, and diesel and gasoline engines.
- Ability to diagnose trouble in Diesel and Gas engines, power train, braking, steering, exhaust and cooling systems.
- Ability to follow automotive and equipment diagrams.
- Ability to use tools, machines, and diagnostic equipment of the automotive trade.
- Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
- Ability to learn maintenance and repair trades.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Driver’s License.
- Appropriate vehicle operation, e.g. fire apparatus or CDL Class B with air brakes must be obtained within twelve (12) months of appointment.
- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) F-3 Fire pumps or manufacture factory fire pump repair training. F5 Aerial or manufacture factory aerial ladder aerial repair training, T4 Brakes Certifications must be obtained within twelve (12) months of appointment.
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) T6 electrical and electronic certifications must be obtained within six (6) months of appointment.
SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 128, UPSEU; previously Local 71, CILU. Salary governed by current Local 71 salary table. Agreements available to review

Selection Plan
This is a General Fund, "Tested" position.
Applicants meeting minimum requirements will be invited to participate in a Civil Service exam process at a later date.
