PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is responsible supervisory work pertaining to a variety of duties related to the provision of school crossing guards throughout the city.

Work involves the training of new school crossing guards, the evaluation of performance, and close daily working relationships with the personnel. Work assignments are made by the Deputy and the overall program is reviewed by the Director of Traffic & Parking.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Patrols and supervises school crossing sites.
  • Conducts training programs for new school crossing guards.
  • Monitors performance of school crossing guards.
  • Inspects equipment and uniforms to insure maintenance and compliance of requirements.
  • Participates in the morning calling of guards to insure sites are properly supervised.
  • Evaluates and prepares plans for existing and proposed school crossing sites.
  • Prepares reports as required.
  • Implements assignments as recommended by superiors.
  • Confers with supervisors concerning work performance and the institution of new procedures.
  • Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school and at least three years of experience in public service delivery including a minimum of one year at a supervisory level; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of safety rules pertaining to pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the techniques of supervising school crossing guards.
  • Ability to give clear, concise instructions.
  • Ability to think and acts quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to write and speak effectively.
  • Ability to supervise and assess work performance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with personnel and the public.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening, (3) registration in the New Haven COVID Vaccination/Testing portal and providing proof of Vaccination status, as per the Mandatory COVID Vaccination/Testing Policy, and (4) a 90-day probationary period. Selection Plan

This is a General Fund, "Tested" position.
