Summary
Responsible for assisting the Communications Manager and supporting the Strategic Communications team with developing and managing the Airport’s communications programs (internally and externally). Works directly with employees, departments, executives, external partners, vendors, citizens and other key stakeholders to establish and deliver consistent messaging and materials. Strong ability to translate complex information into clear and engaging stories that align with the Airport’s brand and strategic objectives. This person reports directly to the Communications Manager. Independent judgment and initiative are exercised within established guidelines; performance evaluated based on discussions and work products.
General Information:
- Valid driver’s
license and ability to qualify for and maintain a City driving permit.
- Standard hours
apply, however, occasionally non-traditional work hours are necessary to
accomplish projects, and subject to emergency calls back to work.
- Certain
convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges
and therefore exclude from employment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Writes compelling stories for the Aviation Department’s internal and external publications, website, intranet and communication campaigns.
- Supports digital storytelling by writing scripts and narratives for various multimedia projects, ensuring brand alignment.
- Collaborates with internal teams and external stakeholders to gather information and develop story ideas.
- Conducts interviews with stakeholders to create human-interest stories.
- Assists with spokesperson training and develops talking points for executives to ensure effective communication and media interactions.
- Assists in the development and execution of communication strategies to enhance the Airport’s visibility and reputation.
- Helps with crisis communications.
- Oversees and implements communication campaigns.
- Helps manage CLT’s portfolio of publications.
- Proofreads Airport communications including, but not limited to newsletters, articles, blogs, press releases, employee emails and website content.
- Assists with research and data requests.
- Manages and/or supports the Strategic Communications team with special events and functions.
- Attends internal and external meetings on behalf of the Strategic Communications team.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of the practices and techniques used in the field of journalism, public relations, communications and web application maintenance and development.
- Considerable knowledge of research methods and the application of them to journalism, public relations and communications
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Expertise in AP style
- Ability to adapt writing style to suit difference audiences and purposes
- Strategic thinker
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines on various projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualification
A minimum of five years’ experience in the field of public relations, journalism or communications required. Demonstrated expertise in both internal and external communications. Experience collaborating with graphic designers and vendors including printing and production companies. Background working with government entities is preferable but not required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent and five years relevant experience.
Or
Associate's Degree and three years relevant experience.
Conditions of Employment
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
