Summary

The Crime Scene Technician Lead at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) supervises technicians, leads crime scene searches, and manages processing. Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills are required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead personnel to include: personnel issues, training, and the conduction of investigations involving violations of department’s policies and procedures as well as provide employees feedback, guidance, and complete yearly reviews. 
• Provides technical direction and coordination in the training of new and current Crime Scene Technicians.  
• Conducts training of other police department employees as needed and provides demonstrations to outside individuals and organizations as requested.
• Schedule personnel to ensure adequate staffing. 
• Effectively communicate and engage with employees, other agencies, and work-related professionals/ organizations as well as the public as necessitated by the work.
• Monitor radio traffic and CAD (computer aided dispatch) to ensure effective assignment/ response of Crime Scene Calls.
• Reviews reports for accuracy while ensuring that evidence is properly recorded and documented. 
• Ensure that correct procedures are followed to guarantee that the integrity of evidence is properly maintained.
• Responsible for the Training and Maintenance of specialized crime scene unit equipment.
• Responds to scenes to process and assist as needed.
• Attends training on a variety of Forensic and Criminal Justice topics annually. 
• Must follow all rules and regulations as set forth in City, Department, and Unit Policies and Performance Standards. 
• Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Experience with crime scene processing procedures.
• Advanced knowledge of principles, methods, equipment, and current techniques used in crime scene investigations and forensics.
• Knowledge of investigative and laboratory techniques. 
• Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, and agency practices and procedures.  
• Applicable knowledge of arrest, search, and seizure.
• Skilled in problem-solving techniques.  
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to multi-task, to work with frequent interruptions, and to change prioritization of tasks.
• Ability to be available on a rotating 24-hour call back schedule to assist in investigations.
• Ability to respond to crime scenes to process and/or assist in processing

Preferred Qualification

A four (4) year degree in forensic science, related natural/ physical science, or criminal justice and at least two (2) years of relevant work experience as a crime scene investigator with CMPD 

Minimum Qualifications

High School Graduate or Equivalent and five years or related work experience

OR

Associate's Degree and three years of related work experience

OR

Bachelor's Degree and one year of related work experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
