Summary

Performs landscaping tasks and operates a variety of small engine equipment. Work includes chemical application, and general landscape maintenance and installation. This position operates various types of equipment at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.  Equipment operated includes mowers, skid steer, dingo, water truck, small motorized equipment, and chemical sprayer.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Works assigned shift Tuesday to Friday from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm. Ability to work other shifts and overtime when required by assignment, inclement weather or urgent/emergency situations.  Subject to emergency calls back to work.
  • Certain criminal convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore impact the ability to employ or retain employment.
  • Ability to acquire within one year of employment a valid CDL-B license. Ability to obtain a tank vehicle endorsement within six months of employment. Must meet requirements to obtain and maintain a City driving permit.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Sprays weeds and treats for pests. 
  2. Performs routine and special landscape maintenance. 
  3. Installs plant material and maintains landscape areas.
  4. Operates small engine equipment such as chainsaws, string trimmers and blowers.
  5. Operates heavy equipment and trucks such F550 dump truck, skid steer, dingo, truck with trailer and chemical sprayer.
  6. Inspects assigned equipment for readiness and safety.
  7. Completes related records and reports.
  8. Performs related manual labor.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Landscape, maintenance, and installation. 
  • Safety precautions and work hazards involved in the operation of equipment, traffic laws, and regulations involved in the operation of equipment.
  • Read and write sufficiently to complete records and reports. Basic computer skills to complete online work orders.
  • Work independently at multiple tasks, read, and write sufficiently to complete records and reports. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. 
  • Communicate in a professional and positive manner with airport tenants and the public. 
  • Work other shifts and overtime when required.

Preferred Qualification

High School graduation/GED and at least one year experience operating one or more pieces of equipment mentioned previously, or if no high school diploma/GED, three years’ experience required. One to three years’ experience in the operation of one or more of the pieces of equipment mentioned previously. Valid CDL-B preferred with no more than 6 points or the ability to acquire within one year. Ability to obtain and maintain City driving permit. 

Minimum Qualifications

Three years related work experience

OR

High School Graduate or Equivalent and one year related work experience

AND

Required:  CDL A or B depending on area of assignment

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
