Function

This position will work in the Environmental Management Division on permitting and compliance related projects to support CLTWater’s water resource recovery facilities, industrial pretreatment program, and biosolids program.

Summary

This position supports the monitoring of regulatory requirements as required by the Federal Clean Water Act and NC water quality requirements as they relate to wastewater treatment.  These requirements are centered on wastewater treatment plant performance, permitting, and compliance for the purpose of protection of the environment and public health.  This is accomplished through sample collection and data analysis, trending, review and interpretation.  This position may also support special projects that increase treatment plant efficiencies or further support treatment plant compliance.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Performs field sampling activities by properly collecting, testing, and analyzing wastewater samples; collecting both grab and composite samples; calibrating, maintaining, and monitoring automatic samplers and field testing equipment for proper sample collection and analysis; submitting samples to CLTWater environmental lab using chain of custody; transporting samples to various locations; preparing and maintaining complete, accurate, and legible records. Observes/reports on facility conditions/operations.
Data management with data entry into multiple computer software systems/formats; reviewing data for accuracy and completeness; organizing, trending, and visually presenting data; maintaining key metrics.
Participation in special projects as needed

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the science of wastewater treatment.
Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
Skill in basic math
Skill in using computers and proficiency in job-related software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is medium work and requires applying 30 pounds of force frequently and exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, distinguishing among sounds, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, expressing ideas by spoken word, shouting above noises, visual acuity in data/color/observations/equipment/inspections, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Requires working indoors/outdoors; during inclement weather; around chemicals, solvents, and dust in an industrial environment.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma and completion of one year of undergraduate college level work in a science related discipline such as biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, or environmental engineering.

Salary

This is a one year, part time position with no benefits.

$19.00 - $22.00Hr Commensurate with Education level and Experience

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
