Overview

The City of Charlotte is the largest municipality in North Carolina and the 15th largest city in the United States, with a total population of more than 897,000 citizens. A major commerce center, Charlotte hosts several of the nation’s largest banks and technology companies.

Corridors of Opportunity program has directed $147+ million in funding the City of Charlotte and corporate partners, funding over 75 projects with 20+ partners. The program supports six underinvested areas in Charlotte to:

  • Foster thriving communities for residents and businesses
  • Build lasting legacies
  • Grow communities equitably

  • Beatties Ford/Rozzelles Ferry
  • Central/Albemarle
  • Freedom/Wilkinson
  • North Graham/North Tryon
  • Sugar Creek

Summary

The City’s Corridors of Opportunity Program in Charlotte, NC is seeking motivated college students to participate in its Summer 2024 Internship Program. The ideal candidate will be a student in good academic standing with an enthusiasm for learning, strong interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills and a sincere interest in learning about cross-collaborative place-based investment. Candidates should be a rising undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited school during the 2024-2025 school year and available to work up to full time (40-hour week) beginning May through August 2024.  Selected candidates will be compensated at a rate of $19-24/hour depending on academic status.

This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with the Corridors of Opportunity team which provides strategic direction and engagement for the City of Charlotte’s investments into six priority corridors. The Corridors program interacts across city departments, other public agencies, non-profit service providers and place-based organizations. You will gain critical experience by participating in a variety of projects, engagement activity and policy research and development, preparing documents and reports, attending meetings with city staff and officials as well as community meeting and events hosted by the Corridors team. 

We are looking for highly competent students who will produce quality work and are willing to be an integral part of the Corridors of Opportunity team. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect data, conduct survey and research on corridors program-related tasks including new and early-stage projects and programs and on community needs within the COO geographies 
  • Assist COO team and Community Engagement manager with organizing, coordinating and attending community events, workshops, and meetings to represent the COO program and build relationships
  • Assist with establishing best practices for engagement within corridor communities 
  • Provide technical and administrative support for COO team including preparing meeting materials including agendas and presentations, review and edit documents
  • Ability to collect, analyze and interpret data 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program and in good academic standing
  • Enrolled in a program in fields of community development, economic development, public administration, public policy, real estate, urban planning, economics, or have other relevant work/study/civic experience.
  • Comfortable conducting public engagement activities, public speaking and providing good customer service
  • Ability to collect, analyze and interpret data 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in an accredited college or university leading towards a Bachelor's degree with major course work in a related field of study specific to the departmental and/or work assignment.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
