Summary
The Land Development Division of the Department is seeking an entry level Associate Planner to assist with administration of the zoning commercial plan review process. Work performed is technical and detail oriented requiring the application of zoning regulations as they relate to proposed land development projects. Ability to participate in a team environment and the performance of duties on schedule and with accuracy is a must.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- General responsibilities include substantial customer service duties such as answering inquiries via phone calls, emails and walk-ins from design professionals, attorneys, developers, building contractors, and the public concerning zoning issues and development projects.
- Technical review responsibilities to include architectural and minor land development project reviews using multiple plan review systems and data bases.
- Frequently coordinates with other City staff and occasionally attends or assists with meetings with designers and developers.
- Additional requirements include the ability to participate in a team environment, comprehend and explain technical code regulations, and problem solve complicated zoning related matters.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Excellent communication and customer service skills (such as the ability to effectively communicate graphically, verbally, and in writing).
- Basic knowledge of site design and architectural principles and practices.
- Knowledge of planning and land development principles and practices related to regulatory services.
- Ability to comprehend technical ordinance and legal requirements related to zoning matters and convey such information in an easy to understand fashion.
- Analytical skills applicable to planning and regulatory projects and initiatives.
- Effective time management (maintaining project review schedules, managing multiple projects).
- Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams to achieve positive impacts on the community.
- Ability to perform effectively and efficiently with a moderate level of supervision.
- Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualification
- AICP, CZO, or other certifications desirable but not required.
- At least two years or more of relevant planning and/or zoning related work experience preferred.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Geography, Political Science, Public Administration, or related field.
Conditions of Employment
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
