Summary

The Economic Development Department is seeking an undergraduate level intern to aid in the production of the Mayor’s Internatioanl Community Awards (MICA). This event honors foreign-owned firms in the Charlotte region for their outstanding contributions to philanthropy and individuals or organizations who have contributed to the development of Charlotte's international community.

In addition to being an integral part of the event planning process, this internship offers an opportunity to garner a wealth of knowledge pertaining to international relations, economic development, and municipal government. 

This position will be in person for the spring semester. The applicant will need to be available to work through the end of the month of May and work on the evening of the event itself. This position will report directly to the International Business Manager and Chief of Protocol.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • General office administration
  • Build professional relationships with City of Charlotte employees, elected officials, and the international business community 
  • Follow-up with companies on sponsorships, tickets, and nomination details
  • Community outreach to our diverse population to encourage event attendance
  • Database maintenance - updating and maintaining the MICA invitation databases
  • Event management and execution 

Preferred Qualification

  • Strong organizational and research skills
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to multi-task
  • Ability to problem-solve and work independently
  • Interest in and commitment to international relations and cooperation
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
  • Experience with social media (including Twitter and LinkedIn)
  • Experience in event planning is desirable
  • Knowledge of a second language is desirable

Minimum Qualifications

Current enrollment in an accredited college or university leading towards a Bachelor's degree with major course work in a related field of study specific to the departmental and/or work assignment.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
