Summary

This position is responsible for inspecting private development construction projects for compliance with City land development regulations and standards. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides professional and technical instruction, guidance and information to consultants, contractors, engineers, City officials, and the public regarding installation and regulatory issues
  • Conducts field meetings and inspects, documents, and verifies project is constructed in compliance with plans and specs: 
    • Construction procedures
    • Design and materials specifications
    • Storm water/ Land Development / CDOT requirements
    • Safety requirements 
  • Examines construction project plans, specifications, and material for compliance with sidewalks, ramps, driveways, streets, storm drainage, storm water detention, and grading
  • Rejects defective work or substandard materials
  • Advises contractor of necessary corrective action
  • Responds to inquiries and complaints from public and private agencies 
  • Communicates effectively with contractors, owners, developers, engineers, and construction managers

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to analyze construction plans, specifications, and site maps 
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, organize, and manage a high-volume of administration requests
  • Ability to apply conflict resolution techniques
  • Knowledge of construction materials and testing and construction methods and practices used in various types of construction 
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures and regulations regarding infrastructure installation
  • Knowledge of survey methods, practices and techniques 
  • Communicates appropriately, accurately and clearly in timely manner providing outstanding service 
  • Performs job duties with reliability and minimal supervision
  • Collaborates effectively within workgroups and across the organization
  • Basic to intermediate computer proficiency level in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet Explorer  
  • Ability to obtain City driver’s permit 
  • Possess dependable vehicle   

Preferred Qualification

  • Minimum of five years of experience in road construction, multifamily development, or subdivision construction 
  • Continuing education coursework in construction management or related field
  • Proficient interpreting project specifications, soil density and testing reports 
  • Understand regulatory requirements for Road, Storm Water and Concrete Installation 
  • Infrastructure instillation or Inspection experience 
  • Ability to communicate in both English & Spanish 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma/GED with three (3) years of relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties 

Salary

  • $54,390 - $67,988 Commensurate with Experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
