Summary

Works as a lead airfield electrician at Charlotte Douglas International Airport primarily performing high voltage airfield electrical work installing cabling, transformers, lights both in pavement and above pavement, and airfield signage; locating and repairing malfunctions in electrical circuits/equipment/regulators; inspecting, servicing, testing, performing PM’s and repairing systems. Performs other general maintenance work incidental to above duties as necessary and maintain parking lot light, bus shelter lights, and coordinating repairs to Duke Energy lighting.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  • Works 3rd shift Wednesday - Saturday 8:00 PM - 6:00 AM. This position is considered essential and requires the ability to work other shifts and overtime when required by assignment, rotating on-call duty, inclement weather, or urgent/emergency situations. Subject to emergency calls back to work.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Installs, repairs and maintains airfield lighting circuits, airfield lighting control systems, lighting regulators, emergency generators, uninterrupted power supply (UPS), transfer switches and other miscellaneous building electrical duties. Tests operational efficiency of airfield lighting circuits, electrical lighting regulators and electronic test equipment, and maintains logs.  Conducts maintenance checks and makes repairs in compliance with specifications and FAA requirements.
  2. Installs, repairs and maintains aircraft ramp lighting.
  3. Provides lead direction and training to other employees.
  4. Operates motorized vehicles as needed, including aerial lifts, fork-lifts, trenchers, backhoes and pick-up trucks.
  5. Inspects assigned Airport construction projects.  Coordinates work with contracted construction inspectors and tenants.
  6. Coordinates parking lot lighting installation and repair with contract vendors.
  7. Subject to emergency call back for equipment repairs and inclement weather.
  8. Provides lead role when supervisor is not available.
  9. Assists all Airfield Maintenance crews with any assigned tasks as needed. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards, environmental regulations, safety precautions or trade and the ability to enforce adequate safety precautions against such hazards.
  • Considerable knowledge of and skill in the use of the standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment related to the assigned areas of work or specialty.
  • Excellent organizational and reasoning skills required, as well as the ability to follow directions, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, complete projects accurately and on schedule, and maintain and prepare records and reports.
  • Ability to read and write sufficiently to complete related paperwork and read schematic designs and blueprints. 
  • Ability to accurately follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, tenants, and the public.

Preferred Qualification

High school graduate/GED required preferably with college level electrical courses. NC electrical license preferred. AAAE-ACE (American Association of Airport Executives - Airport Certified Employee) certificate and ADB-CAP certification from ADB Safe gate preferred. Minimum five years of experience in the electrical trade required or Associate’s degree with three years of experience required. Must be familiar with or have the ability to become familiar with FAA part 139 standard requirements for the airfield environment and TSA airport security requirements.

Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to qualify for City driving permit. 
  • Successful candidate must successfully pass and obtain Movement Area Training (MAT) Endorsement within the first 6 months of employment in order to maintain employment.

Minimum Qualifications

Seven years relevant work experience

OR

High School Graduation or equivalent and five years relevant work experience
