Summary
Responsible for assisting crews in performing construction work that includes, the installation and maintenance of electronic loop detectors, concrete pads for pedestrian signals and controller cabinets, underground pipe for loop detectors, pull boxes, any other related duties assigned by supervisor. Operate a variety of specialized equipment and hand tools. Ability to operate Loop saw. Demonstrate sound judgment on daily activities and performing routine maintenance on specialized construction equipment.
This position generally reports to the Labor Crew Chief I, however is also responsible to follow direction of Sign & Marking Technician and Field Engineering & Operations Supervisor. The Street Crew Member is responsible to meet performance and production standards as assigned.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform installation and routine maintenance of specialized signal detector loop equipment and related materials.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Operate light, medium, and heavy duty: machinery, equipment, and vehicles.
- Conduct inventory of parts, equipment, or materials.
- Perform safety tasks, setting up temporary work zones.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Operate a variety of specialized equipment and hand tools.
- Demonstrate good judgment on daily activities.
- Work in a team environment.
- Work in all types of weather.
- Perform related work as required.

- Ability to use specialized equipment and hand tools used in traffic operations.
- Must be able to perform heavy manual labor; able work outside in all types of weather;
- Demonstrated experience with the use of hand tools is preferred.
- Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions involved with working in and around moving traffic
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices for the installation, operation and maintenance of traffic signal and supporting systems

- May climb ladders, work on slippery and uneven surfaces, work in confined spaces, and use vibrating machinery or tools.
- Work in traffic; walk in and around moving vehicles and equipment.
- Work involves sitting periodically, including riding in vehicle, attending trainings and meetings, or during use of office equipment such as computer for administrative tasks.

Minimum Qualifications
- Must have a valid Driver’s License at time of hire

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
