Summary

This is a technical position located in CDOT/Engineering & Operations Division’s Implementation Section. This position will be responsible for technical design, coordination and implementation of traffic control and signalization projects. Work involves reviewing/preparing plans, identifying roadway hazards during construction, and coordinating signal/cable construction with public utility companies, contractors and other City departments. Work requires independent judgment and initiative, good communication skills that may involve public contact, and the ability to work well in teams. Knowledge of City codes, state regulations and federal standards which pertain to traffic control devices, roadway design, utility installation, and related matters is preferred. Experience with AutoCad is preferred. Must have a valid NC driver’s license and the ability to obtain a City driving permit.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Identify signal utility conflicts and coordinate their design and resolution for both public and private projects. 
  2. Review proposed traffic control designs/devices, recommend alternatives within guidelines of the Department’s design standards with the goal to minimize utility conflicts and to assess right of way needs. 
  3. Work with signal design manual & MUTCD to design and install proposed signals using AutoCAD. 
  4. Monitor traffic control on all assigned projects. 
  5. Coordinates work on assigned projects within CDOT, with other City Departments, private developers, contractors, utility companies and governmental agencies. 
  6. Coordinate with Duke Energy and prepare meter service requests. 
  7. Prepare plans and work orders for City crews or contractors to complete traffic control, signals, signs and pavement marking projects. 
  8. Maintains status of projects in a daily diary. 
  9. Prepare record plans of completed signal work using AutoCAD. 10. Perform related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency of the principles and practices of civil/traffic/transportation engineering. 
  • Knowledge of and experience in the use of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). 
  • Knowledge of roadway and site development construction techniques and processes. 
  • Knowledge of city codes, state regulations and federal standards which pertain to traffic control devices, roadway design, utility installation, and related matters is preferred. 
  • Prepare plans and work orders for traffic signals, signs and markings. 
  • Proficiency in MS-Word and Excel. 
  • Experience with AutoCAD is preferred. 
  • Monitor work zone traffic control and coordinate construction activities in the field. 
  • Assist in the design and review of temporary work zone traffic control plans. 
  • Ability to interpret and prepare engineering designs, plans and specifications. 
  • Ability to schedule and coordinate adjustments, relocations and installations of projects with various utility companies and agencies. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, consultants and the public by using good customer service skills. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people both orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to perform technical computations, to make cost estimates, and to compile engineering data and statistics.

Preferred Qualification

  • 1-3 years of experience with construction, traffic control or engineering related work.
  • 1-3 years of CAD experience is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Graduation or Equivalent and three (3) years of relevant work experience
  • or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties.

Salary

  • $52,806.00 - $66,008.00 / Year; Commensurate with experience
