Summary

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is seeking a data driven transit planner to join a dynamic team of planners and analysts to reimagine transit service for the Charlotte region. CATS is on the cusp of implementing the largest deployment of Microtransit in North Carolina and is advancing multiple rapid transit projects.

The Transit Planner reports directly to the Manager of Strategic Planning and will provide a key role within CATS Planning Division by supporting CATS initiative to be a leader in performance-based transit planning. Additionally, this position will have key responsibilities on CATS GIS team by working collaboratively on maintaining and improving bus stop and other transit asset databases. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and a team player with a passion for data-driven planning and spatial analysis.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support to planning activities related to the transit projects and plans included in area Metropolitan Transportation and Comprehensive Transportation Plans.
  • Serve on transit planning study teams that will include GIS support, public participation and general planning activities.
  • Provides GIS support for service planning activities, such as route mapping and stop-level ridership analysis. 
  • Accurately prepares monthly reports and data analysis for areas including on-time performance, ridership, and service performance metrics.
  • Assist in the development and tracking of a strategic bus stop capital plan
  • As part of your responsibility to support the CATS Safety Culture, report safety concerns and issues through the various methods established by CATS as outlined in the ASP.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and experience with ArcGIS 10.x is necessary for daily activities. Experience with Tableau, Power BI, or similar data analysis tools. Good communications skills and a collaborative approach to work products are considered ideal.

 

Preferred Qualification

Transportation planning experience and knowledge of transit planning best practices preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Four-year degree with a BA/BS in geography, engineering, urban planning or related field or an equivalent combination of background, experience and skills necessary to perform the essential duties of the position. The ideal candidate would have experience related to implementation of transit amenities or related public work projects. 

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
