Summary

Responsible for assisting the Communications Manager with developing and managing the Airport’s communications programs (internally and externally). Works directly with multiple employees, departments, executives, external partners, vendors, citizens and other key stakeholders to establish and deliver consistent messaging and materials. This person reports directly to the Communications Manager. Independent judgment and initiative is exercised within established guidelines; performance evaluated on the basis of discussions and work products.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Writes articles for the Aviation Department’s internal and external publications, website, intranet and communication campaigns.
• Helps with crisis communications.
• Oversees and implements communication campaigns.
• Helps manage CLT’s family of publications.  
• Proofreads Airport communications including, but not limited to newsletters, articles, blogs, press releases, employee emails and website content. 
• Assists with research and data requests.
• Manages and/or supports the Strategic Communications team with special events and functions.
• Attends internal and external meetings on behalf of the Strategic Communications team.
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of the practices and techniques used in the field of journalism, public relations, communications and web application maintenance and development.
• Considerable knowledge of research methods and the application of them to journalism, public relations and communications 
• Excellent written and oral communications skills
• Expertise in AP style
• Strong organizational skills 
• Strategic thinker
• Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines on various projects simultaneously
• Ability to develop and manage budgets
• Ability to work independently and make decisions
• Ability to work flexible schedule including, nights, weekends and holidays
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office 
• Ability to prepare professional level, publications and other information for dissemination to employees and the public 
• Ability to develop new programs and activities
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public 
• Ability to work in a small team environment
• Ability to demonstrate initiative and self-motivation in a rapidly changing work environment

• Strong follow-through skills

Preferred Qualification

  • A minimum of three+ years’ experience in the fields of public relations, journalism or communications.
  • Communications background inclusive of internal and external communications.
  • Experience to include working with off-set and digital printers along with graphic designers. 

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent and five years relevant experience.

Or

Associate degree and three years relevant experience.

Or

Bachelor's Degree and one year of experience.

Or

Master's Degree

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
