Introduction

The Technology Support Associate reports to the I&T Infrastructure Supervisor and assists in the support for the overall operation and cyber security aspects for the transit network and infrastructure systems, data, related sub-systems, and interfaces in support of the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS).

This position will be responsible for technology support of transit operations, business solutions, and fare collection systems. These systems include, however they are not limited to: operating systems (Windows, Linux, IOS, etc.), desktops/laptops, communications hardware (cellular phones, switches, data modems, radios, media converters, AV systems, telephones), CCTV systems, UPS/Power systems, ticketing & parking systems, industrial control equipment, and all electronic technology related devices.  

This position interacts with staff, vendors, consultants, contractors, and users throughout I&T and CATS.  Supports senior technical staff in the implementation and support of transit business technology requirements and projects. Requires a willingness to work in non-traditional IT environments and has ability to work independently and react to rapidly changing priorities

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports PCs and peripherals; performs PC refresh duties
  • Configures and supports mobile cellular devices
  • Assists in transit technology asset tracking
  • Performs lower-level technical project implementation duties
  • Installs technology software on PCs and industrial controllers.
  • Communicates and documents issues, action items, corrective actions, preventive and corrective maintenance procedures
  • Participates in rotating on-call support for operational systems during nights and weekends, as required
  • Supports basic troubleshooting of transit SCADA and industrial controls technology
  • Works with peer infrastructure teams on rail and building network devices and phones
  • As part of your responsibility to support the CATS Safety Culture, report safety concerns and issues through the various methods established by CATS as outlined in the ASP.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of Microsoft OS and software
  • Understanding of TCP/IP model
  • Understanding of cellular devices
  • Must possess strong PC troubleshooting skills 
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills
  • High level of professionalism, integrity and commitment to quality
  • Ability to work in team environment 
  • Ability to complete tasks and meet deadlines with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualification

  • Associate degree in a technology or engineering field of study -or- military equivalent.   
  • Experience technologies such as OS platforms, cellular phones, printers, wireless systems, VoIP, radio communications, AVL systems, CCTV systems, industrial controls, or real-time information systems.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Graduate or Equivalent and seven years related work experience

OR

Associate's Degree with five years related work experience

OR

Bachelor's Degree and three years related work experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
