Summary

The City of Charlotte's Aviation Department seeking a Heavy Equipment Service Technician – Lead that will assist in repairing and providing guidance and leadership to a team of skilled automotive and equipment maintenance technicians for the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.  The position is responsible for maintaining and repairing a wide array of automotive and airport specific equipment and serves as a back-up to the Equipment Shop Supervisor. This person will facilitate communication from technicians to shop management to provide critical customer service by communicating with departments for fleet availability and customer concerns.  The Lead Technician is directly responsible for the quality of repairs from the fleet shop and conducts quality checks on all repaired equipment, in addition to completing their own assigned work orders and repairs. The position assists in overseeing the maintenance of shop equipment and monitors the shop area to eliminate unsafe and hazardous working conditions. Major emphasis for this position includes developing team cohesion, leadership, customer service, innovative approach to problem solving, and communication.

General Information:
Schedule subject to overtime, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends based on assignment; also, schedule subject to change and emergency calls back to work. 
Valid driver’s license and ability to qualify for City driving permit. 
Certain criminal convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore exclude from employment.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as the Lead Technician for the Airport Fleet Maintenance Shop 
Assist the Shop Supervisor in leading the shift daily. 
Provide technical support to staff by answering questions and acting as a teacher and mentor to employees
Identify current and future training needs for employees
Completes their own Work Orders in a timely fashion, (Approximately 60% Direct Work, 40% Supervision and QC)
Provides customer service to internal city departments by consistently communicating and coordinating fleetwide projects and initiatives 
Monitors work order status and dates to increase fleet availability
Build credibility and trust with staff, operational departments, and local vendors by developing relationships and establishing trust with partners
Assist in efforts to develop procedures and processes to maintain a safe and productive working environment
Serve a leadership role in the overall operations of Fleet Management and the Aviation Department
Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Broad knowledge and experience in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy-duty fleet equipment.  
Knowledge of and ability to use FASTER or similar computer-based fleet information management systems 
Ability to work independently and confidence to make fair and reasonable decisions based on facts of the situation 
Prefer progressively responsible leadership and organizational experience in equipment repair with a demonstrated ability to effectively direct and guide a team
Proven customer service, collaboration, conflict management, interpersonal communication, and process improvement skills are essential
Ability to evaluate customer satisfaction, develop cooperative associations, and utilize resources to continuously improve customer satisfaction.
Computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite Products (Word and Excel)

Preferred Qualification

Degree or certification from an accredited technical school or college. 
Manufacturer training certification recognized by ASE, or relevant ASE certifications. 
At least five years of experience in a fleet shop operation. 

Minimum Qualifications

Five years related work experience

OR

High School Graduate or Equivalent and three years related work experience

Conditions of Employment

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
