Function

The co-op participant must be able to commit to the full one-year assignment and be available to work an agreed upon weekly/hourly schedule. The training will include exposure to Charlotte Water Engineering division in addition to gaining job readiness skills.

Summary

The City of Charlotte, Charlotte Water Department is accepting applications for the Engineering Co-op position for the Pipeline Academy Co-op Program. This individual will work under the supervision of the Charlotte Water Engineering Division. The candidate can be a student currently enrolled in a post-secondary education program in Engineering, Math, Construction or Project Management, or related curriculum, or have post-secondary experience in the related areas.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Applicants for this position will learn the following tasks as it pertains to the daily work
operations at Charlotte Water. The work will include rotations with various workgroups to experience the full scope of a project.  

Assist in various phases of project development (survey, planning, design, construction and consultant documents, and construction) for
water and wastewater pipeline
Aid in field survey collection (including basic equipment training) and data translation for utilization into Civil 3D
Attend pre-design site walks, pre-construction field meetings, and post-construction project walkthrough (including punch list creation)
Aid in in-house design using Civil 3D of water and sanitary sewer pipeline extensions as well as
minor pipeline improvements, including exposure to field survey, permitting through local and
state agencies, real estate considerations, and construction inspection
Aid in GIS data interpretation, translation, and map creation
Aid in the inspection of construction projects, including field data collection, pay application review, and field decisions
Gain experience with preparing reports, maintaining project data, completing permit applications, and preparing as-built information
Gain exposure to e-Builder, ESRI, and AutoCAD software products

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Proficient with Microsoft Office

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Standing, walking, bending, and light lifting

WORK ENVIORNMENT: While performing duties of this position, employees regularly work in outdoor field conditions and in an office setting.

Minimum Qualifications

Post-secondary experience, current or recent graduate in an accredited college or university ( Associates- Bachelors) with major course work in a related field of study specific to the departmental or work assignment.

Valid North Carolina Driver's License

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
