Summary

The Airport Planning Intern will aid the Airport Planning Department by assisting with complex planning tasks at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.  Work involves contact with interdepartmental groups, agencies, and project teams in support of the Airports capital program and its associated coordination requirements with internal and external stakeholders and partners.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the Planning staff with planning programs, compiles planning data, and assists Planning staff with the execution of the CIP Governance meetings
  • Assists with the development and management of a $3.8 Billion Capital Improvement Program for a near-, short-, and long-term horizon 
  • Assists Planning staff with design reviews and coordinating with Engineering
  • Assists in team oriented planning projects
  • Assists in coordination with other internal stakeholders as needed

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient in common software suites including Word, Excel, and Power Point

  • Understanding of planning principles as it relates to roadway, urban, land-use, or aviation planning.

  • Ability to multi-task various assignments with varying due dates

  • Ability to interpret design drawings in various formats and software suites

  • Ability to interpret regulatory, administrative, and planning documentation as it relates to future capital development

Preferred Qualification

Planning or Engineering courses of study preferred. Interest in learning the technical and regulatory components of aviation as well as interest in large capital programs their support of the Airport Master Plan. Proficient in common software suites including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Bluebeam preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Current enrollment in an accredited college or university leading towards a Bachelor's degree with major course work in a related field of study specific to the departmental and/or work assignment.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
