Storm Water Services' mission is to serve the City of Charlotte by improving surface waters and conveying rainwater safely through well-maintained storm drainage systems. Each year Storm Water Services invests $100+ million in capital improvements and staff manages hundreds of storm drainage improvement projects. Storm Water Services is one of the largest stormwater utilities in the Southeast with approximately 215,000 customer accounts and more than 200 full-time positions.

College Internship

Summary

The Storm Water Services Engineering and Design Division is seeking a Summer 2023 college intern. This position will have an opportunity to assist project managers and project engineers with all aspects of drainage evaluation, engineering, and design activities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complete hydrologic and hydraulic analyses models.
  • Use AutoCAD 3D for drainage analysis and plan production tasks.
  • Interact with the public, meeting with property owners to represent the City.
  • Review drainage calculations and construction documents.
  • Provide project management assistance.
  • Complete stream and channel design techniques to resolve erosion. 
  • Develop construction cost estimates.
  • Coordinate utility conflicts with local utilities.
  • Assist with acquisition of storm drainage easements.
  • Conduct pipe video sessions in the field.
  • Field review of drainage construction practices.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Interest in applying engineering design techniques for storm water modeling and design tasks.
  • Ability to learn and understand engineering software such as Hydro CAD, HEC-RAS, HY8, Arc-GIS, Storm CAD, and Hydroflow.
  • Interest in learning how to use AutoCAD 3D and other engineering software applications.
  • Ability to learn and apply City of Charlotte Land Development Standards, NCDOT Standards and Specifications and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Design Manual.
  • Interest in assisting project engineers in developing construction plans for drainage project repairs and improvements in accordance with all local, state, and federal permitting requirements.
  • Efficient time management skills to be applied to short-term project activities and tasks.
  • Interest in assisting project engineers with design and management of storm water projects through the assessment, planning, conceptual, design, and construction phases.
  • Good organizational skills that can be applied to engineering activities associated with project design.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interest in developing and creating technical reports.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with City employees and the public.

Preferred Qualification

  • Familiar with basic engineering mathematics and geometry skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as undergraduate college student with course study in civil engineering, environmental science, civil engineering technology, or related curriculum.

Salary

  • $18/hour 

Conditions of Employment
