Summary

This is an administrative, technical, and supervisory position directing the work of three Fire Equipment Technicians to ensure the timely maintenance, repair, safety and functionality of fire department equipment. Including self-contained breathing apparatus, dive equipment, thermal imaging cameras, rescue tools, chain saws, ventilation saws, fire service ladders, fire hose, nozzles, hydraulic rescue tools, scene lighting, firefighter protective clothing and various lawn maintenance equipment. 

Establishes work team priorities based on daily needs and preventive maintenance schedules.  Works with vendors to complete the purchase of equipment and supplies.  Serves on the equipment committee and performs equipment evaluations and makes recommendations for purchases.  Ensures that specialized firefighting and life safety equipment is maintained in accordance with recognized standards and that fire apparatus are properly equipped with safe and reliable equipment.

Provides supervision and coordination of the day-to-day equipment maintenance responsibilities of the Logistics Division

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supervises the fire equipment technicians as a direct supervisor. 
  2. Ensures that all functions of the equipment technicians are performed in a timely manner.
  3. Develops and initiates plans of action to get equipment repaired in the most efficient way possible.
  4. Researches and Develops plans to get fire equipment, i.e., saws, fans, lawn equipment, lights, nozzles, respiratory equipment repaired/replaced on a rotational basis.
  5. Maintains positive relationship with the managers of specialized units (dive, USAR, CEU, HazMat, and Emergency Management) to make sure all equipment needs are being met and develops replacement schedules as necessary.
  6. Ensures all maintenance records are on file for all life safety equipment to comply with federal regulations and guidelines.
  7. Ensures that all equipment is being repaired, tested, maintained and returned to service per manufacturer’s guidelines.
  8. Establishes preventative maintenance schedules for all fire department equipment within the scope of the logistics division.
  9. Maintains an awareness of all OSHA, NIOSH, NFPA, MSHA regulations and guidelines and work with these agencies as necessary.
  10. Maintains a good working relationship with equipment vendors and parts suppliers.
  11. Research and evaluate new products to ensure that CFD equipment is up to date, efficient and compliant.
  12. Coordinates fire equipment evaluations with the equipment committee.
  13. Manages budgeted line items to ensure accuracy and spending trends.
  14. Ensures that proper records of repairs and inventory are maintained.   
  15. Performs related duties as required.

Other

This position reports directly to the Division Chief of Fire Logistics.

This position supervises 2-3 Fire Equipment Technicians, completes PRD’s and approves leave.

Provides oversight and training of Fire Equipment Technicians to ensure that all positions are cross trained and capable of providing backup support and assistance for each other.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of applicable standards and regulations related respiratory protection.

 Basic PC literacy.

 

  • Proficiency with MUNIS, CFDNET and other CFD inventory control systems.

 

  • Knowledge of basic firefighting tools and equipment.

 

  • Ability to communicate effectively and work together with other employees to accomplish complex assignments.

 

  • Ability to research and troubleshoot unique challenges related to equipment maintenance and repair.

Positions in this class typically require grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical conditions necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking for extended periods of time.
  • Light to moderate lifting and carrying; some crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling when performing tasks.
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and speech required.

Sensory Requirements:

Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for proofreading, data entry, and tabulating data.

  • Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and/or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain.
  • Comprehensive written information in work-related documents.
  • Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions, moderate exposure to environmental conditions and frequent exposure to computer screens, files, and phone.

 

Preferred Qualification

  •  Experience in the maintenance and repair of fire service equipment and tools.
  •  Experience in the maintenance, repair and testing of self-contained breathing apparatus,  fire service rescue tools.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or Equivalent years of experience working as a Facilities Services Coordinator or similar capacity.

Salary

Starting Salary is $57,000
