Summary
The City of Charlotte is seeking an innovative and enthusiastic individual who wants to make an impact on the city and our community. We are looking for someone passionate about developing winning strategies, leading successful teams and being a part of an organization dedicated to serving one of the fastest growing and most dynamic cities in the country. This position will report directly to the Communications Director, the city’s senior-most communications and marketing executive.
The Deputy Communications Director will work with the department director to develop and implement communications and marketing strategies and programs, as well as help manage the department, including budgeting, personnel management, and developing and implementing departmental policies and procedures.
This position will help oversee the Charlotte Communications & Marketing (CCM) team to provide communications expertise and support to City of Charlotte leaders and city programs while working in a fast-paced, highly visible organization with enthusiasm and energy. Communications support includes, but is not limited to: media/public relations, issues management/crisis communications, social media strategy, marketing, digital strategies, content development and community engagement.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
• Directly manage teams and staff while working successfully / collaboratively across larger communications & marketing leadership team
• Maintain excellent relationships with city leadership/staff and city’s elected officials
• Create & manage budgets / deadlines / objectives / schedules
• Set objectives for CCM team and Assign tasks and projects to team, and manage teams to successful outcomes
• Ensure brand consistency in all communication efforts
• Lead events increasing awareness of City
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Critical thinker understanding departmental goals and how CC&M can support/drive goals
• Experience crafting messaging and communications campaigns
• Ability to work in fast-paced and highly visible organization
• Excellent leadership & communications skills / presentation abilities
• Understanding & interest in current events, politics and government, and ability to anticipate public reaction and think strategically
• Strong organizational skills, including the ability to handle simultaneous priority projects and meet established deadlines
• Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment within general policy guidelines
• Ability to work well with different team members and manage lateral reporting relationships
Preferred Qualification
• Bachelor’s degree in English/Communications/Public Relations/Marketing/Advertising/Journalism or similar field
• Eight years of experience in-house or communications agency
• Experience managing people and teams across complex / integrated organization
• Experience in government or in highly regulated industries
• Track record of successful coaching and managing staff
• Track record of developing and executing communications and marketing strategies/campaigns
• Experience working with journalists, responding to media requests and with issues management/crisis communications
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Level
Degree and seven year(s) of related work experience

Master's Level
Degree and five year(s) of related work experience

The City’s
Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final
