Function

Up to three graduate intern positions are being hired to help Charlotte Water fulfill key projects and initiatives. One position will report to the Strategic Workforce Innovation Lead in the Charlotte Water Workforce Development & Training Team and up to two positions will report to the Public Affairs Manager and sit within the Charlotte Water Communications Team. 

One position will develop and deploy the marketing, branding and rollout strategy supporting the implementation of Qualtrics EmployeeXM employee engagement software within Charlotte Water as a way to identify and respond to employee needs and trends. The other roles will work on projects such as the annual Water Quality Report, Earth Day activities, National Drinking Water Week activities and other community engagement initiatives.


Summary

To help the department effectively respond to employee needs and trends, Qualtrics EmployeeXM is being implemented to survey employees and surface key insights. One position will be responsible for branding the survey experience to drive employee uptake while also developing a strategy to market changes implemented in response to feedback. Up to two other positions will be responsible for developing and executing communications plans that include drafting key messages, identifying target audiences, establishing measurable objectives, and outlining tactics such as social media, public events, blog posts, etc. We are seeking graduate interns to serve in these roles for 6 months to complete the initial development and rollout of these projects.

This is a hybrid position located in Mecklenburg County, NC.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Creates communication plans 
Implements communication tactics across a variety of communication channels: employee message boards, Charlotte Water intranet, print collateral, e-mail, social media, public events, etc.
Writes necessary copy to explain initiatives
Works with internal graphic design staff to develop creative assets as needed
Coordinates with and reports back to stakeholders within the organization
Other duties may be necessary to complete projects as they evolve
Hours will vary throughout the internship depending upon project timelines and needs and will be flexible up to 40 per week; projects are anticipated to last 6 months; some nights and weekends may be needed with advanced notice

Ability to design and implement broad-scale marketing efforts
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Creative graphic design ability using software such as Adobe Creative Suite
Ability to effectively engage with all stakeholders 
Ability to creatively problem-solve with a solutions-oriented, team-based approach
Ability to be flexible with changes in business needs and project demands
Ability to meet project milestones/deadlines
Attention to detail

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (communications, marketing, human resources, or related)
Currently enrolled in a graduate program for marketing, communications, human resources, public administration, or related

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
