Summary

This is a high level technical and skilled position responsible for performing work related to the Special Operations Division Hazardous Materials programs of the Charlotte Fire Department. The position also serves as the back-up to other Special Operations Division responsibilities and functions. This position requires considerable independent work and decision making with limited supervision.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Equipment repair and maintenance, as trained and certified to perform, on a variety of Haz-Mat instrumentation and rescue equipment.  Examples include, but are not limited to: meter operation, calibration, and repair as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Develops preventative maintenance schedules for Haz-Mat equipment as recommended by the manufacturer, including software and firmware updates.
  • Fulfills Phase I environmental requests.
  • Handle Tier II requests routed through the Division.
  • Responds to emergency incidents to support operating Haz-Mat companies with equipment repairs and replenishing of depleted supplies.
  • Makes scheduled and unscheduled deliveries of supplies and equipment to Haz-Mat fire stations.
  • Special Operations equipment inventories & accountability
  • Recommendations for new Haz-Mat equipment and/or supplies for purchase.
  • Other duties as deemed necessary to fulfill the mission of the Charlotte Fire Department.

Preferred Qualification

  • Class A license (Classified or CDL)
  • USAR Collapse Rescue
  • USAR Trench
  • USAR Confined Space
  • Knowledge of Charlotte Fire Department meter program
  • Knowledge of Charlotte Fire Department Haz-Mat program

Minimum Qualifications

  • HS diploma or GED and 3+ years of relevant work experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience necessary to perform the essential job functions
  • Considerable knowledge of fire department equipment.
  • Basic PC literacy for inventory control and purchasing.
  • Current or former Hazardous Materials Technician
  • Current or former Hazardous Materials of Chemistry
  • Completion of ICS 700, 100 and 200
  • Must be physically able to lift up to 50 pounds and able to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Valid North Carolina Class “B” Driver’s License.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
