Introduction

Employees who are hired in this job class will be eligible for a signing bonus of up to $1,000 upon hire and a second payment of $1,000 once the initial six-month new hire probationary period is complete.

Summary

The Airport Shuttlebus Driver's role is to drive buses, safely transporting the traveling public and baggage between the airport terminal and parking facilities. Interact courteously with the public and represent the Airport in a positive, professional manner.

General Information:
  • Works on assigned shift (2nd or 3rd shift) in a 24/7/365 schedule, including holidays. This position will either be 2nd or 3rd shift. Subject to overtime, calls back to work for urgent/emergency situations, and work during inclement weather.
  • Requires a minimum of a Class B CDL with Passenger Endorsement, and the ability to obtain and maintain a City Driving Permit.
  • Must successfully pass and maintain an active Security Threat Assessment (STA) and Criminal History Records Check (CHRC). Certain convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore from employment

Major Duties and Responsibilities

1. Drive passengers and their baggage between the airport terminal and parking facilities.
2. Recognize safety hazards and use appropriate precautions. 
3. Obey all traffic laws and speed limits on airport campus.  
4. Correctly use the two-way radio and proper radio etiquette. 
5. Provide information about the Airport, answer questions, and promptly assist travelers with ground transportation needs. 
6. Interact professionally with all customers, including those displaying negative emotions and behavior.  Promptly contact Bus Operations if a passenger’s behavior is interfering with the safe operation of the vehicle.  
7. Complete related paperwork, such as vehicle inspection reports, and complete pre-trip inspections in accordance with standard operating procedures. 
8. Perform light cleaning inside bus (i.e. clean windows, empty trash, sweep).
9. Assist passengers with boarding or exiting the vehicle as necessary, including: Operation of wheelchair ramp, wheelchair lift, and wheelchair restraints, and baggage of wheelchair occupant; Providing assistance to passengers with visible mobility challenges (e.g. passengers using a cane); and Asking passengers in priority seating to move if space is needed for those with visible mobility challenges. 
10. Other duties, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of NC driving rules, and Commercial Driver’s License rules and requirements.
• Skills to interact courteously with the public and co-workers, and represent the Airport in a positive, professional manner. 
• Ability to safely drive any of the bus models on all the routes.
• Ability to read, comprehend, and speak English clearly enough to be understood over the radio and by passengers. 
• Ability to read and send emails and complete required online training.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. 
• Ability to learn and use a two-way radio and proper radio etiquette. 
• Ability to work professionally with a diverse customer population and co-workers, in a group setting, or individually. 
• Skills to adapt to changes in the work environment, and effectively adjust to frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events.

• Must be able to access and operate various features of all models of buses, including steering wheels, gas and brake pedals, doors, lights, radios, mirrors, gear shifts, parking brakes, signboards, horns, and HVAC controls.  

Minimum Qualifications

Three years related work experience

OR

High School Graduate or Equivalent and one year related work experience

AND

Required:  CDL-B with Passenger Endorsement

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
