Function

The Career and Training Academy participant must be able to commit to the full seven-month assignment and be available to work a minimum of 30 hours per week, Monday- Friday, between 6 am-6 pm. The training will include exposure to the Charlotte Water Engineering division in addition to gaining job readiness skills.

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full-time.  Participant must be available to work a minimum of 30 hours per week between 6 am and 6 pm, M-Fri.  Start and stop times are negotiable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT: Ability to work outside 90% of the time, ability to walk over rough terrain, work in adverse weather conditions, occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds, working on noisy construction sites, residential areas, and in high traffic areas.

Summary

The City of Charlotte, Charlotte Water Department is accepting applications for the Construction Inspector Pipeline Academy position for the Pipeline Academy   Internship Program. The individual will work under the supervision of the Charlotte Water Engineering Division. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Work closely with various Engineering Inspection Teams overseeing construction of water and sewer infrastructure for compliance with the plans, specifications, contracts, and Charlotte Water standards.
Understand the survey, design, construction, inspection, and acceptance processes of Charlotte Water infrastructure projects.
How to perform the inspection duties for monitoring the work of several construction contractors performing various types of water and sewer projects. 
How to identify and report deficiencies in the work and recommend the necessary corrective action
How to perform the final inspection, prepare the punch list and ensure that all items are complete, and assist in the preparation of the record drawings.
Ability to interact with Charlotte Water construction partners, CDOT, NCDOT, surrounding towns, contractors, our customers, and the public regarding the construction projects, timely feedback, and conflict resolution.
Ability to accurately operate all appropriate tools/equipment.
Understand and comply with all OSHA and Charlotte Water Safety Regulations 
How to perform required testing for all types of construction being inspected; paperwork, pre-construction/post-construction photos, and all other required documentation.
Skills in Microsoft Office products and willingness to learn new software products. 
Knowledge of the various Charlotte Water facilities and functions

Minimum Qualifications

HS Diploma or equivalent
Basic knowledge and/or experience in construction or with drawings and construction building materials are a plus, i.e., concrete, iron works, etc.
Valid North Carolina Drivers’ License 

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
