Summary

Pavement Markings

Responsible for assisting crews in performing pavement markings work that includes, the installation and maintenance of center lines, lane lines, edge lines, crosswalks, stop bars, arrows, school legends, railroad legends, any other related duties assigned by supervisor. Position assists crews in the installation, maintenance, or repair of traffic control signs and street markings. Responsible for operating specialized equipment and a variety of different hand tools in the traffic control trade. Demonstrates sound judgment on daily activities and performs routine maintenance and repair on pavement markings in the right of way. This position works primarily in the Pavement Marking Section, however if needed, may be assigned work in other sections or on specialized projects.

Detector Loops

Responsible for assisting crews in performing construction work that includes, the installation and maintenance of electronic loop detectors, concrete pads for pedestrian signals and controller cabinets, underground pipe for loop detectors, pull boxes, any other related duties assigned by supervisor. Operate a variety of specialized equipment and hand tools. Ability to operate Loop saw. Demonstrate sound judgment on daily activities and performing routine maintenance on specialized construction equipment.

Sign Installation

This position is for the Transportation Operations section of the Engineering and Operations division. This person generally reports to the Labor Crew Chief but will also follow the direction of the Sign & Marking Technician and Field Operations Supervisor. Responsible for assisting crews with a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual tasks requiring the use of hand tools and the operation of simple equipment for sign installation maintenance work.

  • Work outside exposed to all weather conditions, chemicals, fumes, solvents, dust, slippery/uneven surfaces, machinery, moving object/vehicles, and excessive noise.
  • May climb ladders, work on slippery and uneven surfaces, work in confined spaces, and use vibrating machinery or tools.
  • Work in traffic; walk in and around moving vehicles and equipment.
  • Work involves sitting periodically, including riding in vehicle, attending trainings and meetings, or during use of office equipment such as computer for administrative tasks.

Work Environment:
  • Work shall require shift or irregular hours determined at the discretion of the supervisor.
  • Outdoor environment - working in various weather conditions and in unconditioned warehouse facilities will be required as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Valid driver’s license with ability to obtain and maintain City driving authorization. 
  • Ability to read and write. Must demonstrate strong communication skills. 
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • General knowledge of methods, practices, procedures, and equipment used in traffic operations. 
  • Ability to complete work as specified with specific or general instructions and supervision (based on task and level). 
  • Ability to complete more difficult tasks with direct supervision and instructions. 
  • Must be able to perform heavy manual labor; able to work outside in all types of weather. 
  • Demonstrated experience with the use hand tools.

Preferred Qualification

  • Experience with work hazards, work zones, safety precautions, 811 Locates procedures, OSHA regulations, ground construction, specialized equipment and hand tools. 
  • Computer experience preferred; including but not limited to typing, word documents, spreadsheets, and work order management system.

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
