Summary

Charlotte Communication & Marketing seeks a creative graphic designer with experience in both print and electronic media who embraces ideas and concepts. We are looking for a well-organized individual who can utilize creative problem-solving and conceptualization to communicate effectively across the organization, take direction from written and spoken ideas, and be willing to offer new solutions with professional courtesy. The successful candidate will be a champion of the city’s brand standards and collaborate efficiently and effectively with the senior graphic designer and creative director. We work in a fast-paced environment that serves all other city departments and creates its own marketing campaigns. The successful candidate will embrace opportunities for collaboration and team-building, and be a self-starter with excellent organizational skills.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Work simultaneously on multiple projects, keep track of change requests and update file management systems accordingly
Create visual aspects of marketing materials, including logos, infographics and icons
Organize messaging objectives and showcase them visually in a compelling and well-organized manner
Enjoy collaborating with communications and marketing staff and leadership, and have an eye trained on exceeding expectations
Be willing to investigate alternative solutions when confronted with less-than-ideal situations, and eager to develop as a creative professional

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Extensive experience with Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign
A keen eye for and love of typography, negative space, visual balance and color harmony
Experience in graphic design across a variety of platforms
Must enjoy unpacking vague or confused materials and use them to create a meaningful design that connects directly to our brand and goes above the routine and ordinary
A sketchbook that shows insightful exploration and conceptualization

Preferred Qualification

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent and five years relevant experience.

Or

Associate's Degree and three years relevant experience.

Salary

Up to $55,000 based on experience 

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
