Function

Must have ability to work other shifts and overtime when needed, especially during inclement weather or urgent/emergency situations.  Subject to emergency callback to work.

Summary

Operates heavy equipment for the Field Maintenance Division maintaining paint and pavement on runways, taxiways, ramp, and other paved areas at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.  Primarily operates truck-mounted and walk behind paint striper, crack sealer and crack router.  May operate the following as needed by assignments: dozer, tandem dump truck, rubber tire loader, track loader, flusher truck, sweeper truck, asphalt rollers, back-hoes, airfield tractor, walk behind concrete/asphalt saw, broom tractor and large street sweeper.  May serve as lead operator for other workers in the absence of the supervisor.  Inspects assigned equipment for readiness and safety.   Completes related records and reports.  Performs related manual labor.  

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Repairs and maintains painted and paved areas by operating truck-mounted and walk behind paint striper, crack sealer and crack router.   Serves as lead operator when required. 
  • Operates the following as needed by assignment: flusher truck, street sweeper, backhoe, tractor, bat wing mower, front-end loader and tandem dump truck.
  • Inspects assigned equipment for readiness and safety. 
  • Completes related records and reports.
  • Performs related manual labor.
  • Perform job duties while complying with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security requirements.
  • Perform job duties that require the operation of vehicles or heavy equipment in/on and around active runway and taxiway environments while follow instructions provided by Federal Aviation Administration traffic controllers and following airfield signage, lighting and paint marking instructions.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must be able to read and write sufficiently to complete records and reports.
  • Must have exceptional equipment operating skills and airfield striping experience related to FAA 139 Certification Program.  
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and work hazards involved in the operation of equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved in the operation of equipment.
  • Knowledge of concrete and asphalt work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional and positive manner with airport tenants and the public.
  • Ability to obtain tractor/trailer endorsement within on year.
  • Ability to obtain Airfield Movement Area (AMA) within six months of employment.  

Preferred Qualification

Additional experience in airfield paint markings related to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 139 Certification and the operation of several pieces of heavy equipment mentioned previously is desirable. Must be familiar with or have the ability to become familiar with FAA part 139 standard requirements for the airfield environment, TSA airport security requirements, and FAA part 77 standard requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Seven years of related work experience

OR

High School Graduate or Equivalent and five years related work experience

AND

Required:  CDL-B and the ability to obtain a CDL-A and Tank Endorsement within the first 12 months of employment
