Summary

Seeking a Senior Carpenter for the Facility Operations Division of the General Services Department. This position will be responsible for performing duties related to general building construction, preventative maintenance, and repairs in approximately 180 City facilities. This position will also be responsible for PM inspections and various building maintenance tasks such as, but not limited to, replacing ceiling tile, repairing carpet/base, hanging displays, etc. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform building construction work including but not limited to cabinet making, metal stud framing, ceiling and acoustical tile installation, sheet rock installation/finishing, and door jamb installation 
  • Obtains materials needs for assignments
  • Repairs and maintains building hardware as needed
  • Repair and install plastic laminate, toilet partitions, and accessories
  • Keep records/timesheets and itemize duties performed 
  • Read diagrams
  • Calculates cost estimates occasionally 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to read blue prints and diagrams
  • Must be able to work overtime, including weekend/holiday on-call and emergency call backs
  • Must have a good driving record, valid driver’s license and ability to maintain a city driving permit
  • Works well as part of a team
  • Must be able to lift to 75lbs. of equipment and/or tools
  • Ability to load and unload extension ladders from top of utility van and place upright against buildings
  • Ability to climb ladders, crawl and work in small spaces
  • Works in an organized, clean and safe manner
  • Ability to use the Microsoft Suite and a computer-based work order management system 

Preferred Qualification

  • High School diploma and six (6) years of experience with a mastery of skills in journey level construction work
  • Considerable knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and practices of the building construction trade
  • Experience working in local government and public safety facilities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five (5) years work experience or High School diploma with three years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of background, experience and skills necessary to perform the essential duties of the position 

Salary

$46,054 - $57,568 Commensurate With Experience

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
