The Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) includes a talented staff of over 450 employees organized into five divisions with an operating budget of $67 million. Summary
CDOT is recruiting for an experienced traffic engineering position in the Implementation Section of the Engineering and Operations Division of CDOT. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to support Charlotte’s fast-paced growth.
The position is responsible for a variety of transportation related work that primarily focuses on design/implementation of traffic signals, traffic control on construction projects, and bridge-related maintenance. Responsibilities include but are not limited to development of plans, preparation of cost estimates, development/refinement of project special provisions, overall management of small or routine maintenance and/or construction projects, field investigations, and coordination with other sections, divisions or departments. This position requires field experience in areas such as roadway construction, signalization, utility relocation and bridge maintenance.
The Implementation Project Coordinator will demonstrate a high level of independent judgment, critical thinking and the ability to plan, prioritize and manage day-to-day activities. Strong candidates will be leaders who work well both independently and in a collaborative environment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership, Communication, & Collaboration
- Coordinate all aspects of assigned projects, ensuring timely and quality completion of work.
- Develop, review, coordinate and implement construction traffic control, signals, signing, and pavement marking plans.
- Design, review, and coordinate utility make ready work internally and with utility companies.
- Inspect or ensure proper inspection of work on assigned projects.
- Prepare cost estimates, assist in contract preparation, and assist in contract administration.
- Promptly, courteously, and effectively respond to citizens’ requests or concerns, via oral and/or written methods.
- Model excellent customer service, ensuring that all internal and external customers are treated promptly and professionally.
- Perform related work as required including assisting the Implementation Project Manager with maintaining project budgets.
- Build and maintain partnerships with NCDOT, as the transportation network in Charlotte is a blended system of City and State assets.
- Work closely with CDOT’s Development Service Division on land development project scope and schedules to align with permitting timeframes.

Traffic Control Devices Installation and Maintenance
- Prepare new and reconfigured traffic signal designs for public and/or private projects.
- Prepare traffic signal record plans, ensuring that up-to-date and accurate information is on file for the City’s signal system.
- Work closely with Operations staff on the installation, maintenance, and modification of elements of the City’s traffic management system.
- Coordinate with contractors that construct and maintain traffic control devices on behalf of CDOT.
Emergency Operations, Special Events and Other Duties
- Represent CDOT in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management Hazard Mitigation Planning exercises as needed.
- Assist in assessment of roadways and bridges in response to emergency conditions
- Assist as needed in provision of long term traffic control in response to failures and/or emergencies.
- Work on special projects as requested by CDOT leadership.

- Act as a public advocate while enforcing good traffic/transportation engineering standards for access, safety, design, construction, and improved traffic operations.
- Ability to use engineering, asset management, and financial software packages such as AutoCAD or MicroStation, Microsoft Office Suite, Cityworks, and Munis.
- Ability to relate engineering principles to land use and city planning principles and exhibit considerable knowledge of modern transportation engineering methods and techniques.
- Ability to facilitate and provide leadership for staff, committees, and citizen groups.
- Ability to build consensus, empower employees, be flexible and manage conflict as well as meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualification
- EIT or PE cert
- 2 years of experience
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Level Degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in transportation engineering or planning and one (1) year of relevant experience.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties
Salary
- $68,043.009 - $85,054.00 / Year; Commensurate with experience
Conditions of Employment
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
