Summary

The City of Charlotte’s Economic Development Department takes great pride in our success with bringing together public and private resources to create places that attract a diversity of talent, job opportunities, and businesses. Areas of focus include development/redevelopment, entrepreneurship and small business support, business recruitment and retention and talent development. Through active and strategic collaborations with other City departments and community partners, the team fulfills its purpose of helping businesses and residents thrive

Major Duties and Responsibilities

The Department is seeking a Program Manager to provide cross-departmental support to the Economic Development team with a focus on startup to high-growth entrepreneurship. This role will cultivate strong relationships within the entrepreneurship ecosystem. The position will work closely with startups and entrepreneurs to understand potential opportunities for growth and provide resources to support the infrastructure for growth.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work directly with startups to assist in navigating the ecosystem, making connections to other startups and to larger companies, and assessing opportunities to pilot within the City of Charlotte government
  • Establish a process that tracks and evaluates the health of the startup to high-growth ecosystem.  Data points could include:
  • Number of startups  
  • Diversity of founders
  • Venture equity and private equity
  • Startups relocating to Charlotte
  • Number Exits 
  • Number of Employees
  • Ecosystem partner metrics
  • Serve on startup ecosystem partner team that meets quarterly and regularly works with partners to support their work. This can be through actions like talking with companies, sitting on boards and advisory committees, and providing volunteer/financial support for events and programming.
  • Partner with the Business Recruitment and Retention team on,
  • Support startups and mid-companies looking for support in the Charlotte market
  • Provide data for pitches and attending pitches where the health of the entrepreneurship ecosystem is an area of focus 
  • Attend and participate on panels focused on startup to high-growth entrepreneurship
  • Connect startup to high-growth companies with talent development and hiring efforts in Charlotte.
  • Stay up to date on latest best practices on startup and high-growth entrepreneurship support
  • Coordinate special projects as needed

  • Serve as an ambassador for the City of Charlotte with an ongoing passion for community work and transforming the city

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3-5 years’ experience in business development, program or project management or consulting
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or project management preferred
  • Working knowledge of Charlotte’s entrepreneurial community

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
