Summary

The City of Charlotte’s Community Relations Department is seeking a Community Relations Specialist who will assist in developing and fostering relationships with State agencies to provide mediation services for Medicaid Appeals for the City of Charlotte. This position is full time temporary dependent on funding.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Provide complex professional service to individuals and groups, staff support for subcommittee activities of the Community Relations Committee
Resolve citizen complaints of inadequate services or unfair treatment by public agencies and private businesses.
Assist the City’s ADA coordinator with education and outreach.
Demonstrates computer proficiency relative to all assigned responsibilities.
Responsible for case management
Responsible for scheduling mediation sessions
Responsible for preparing and filing case files
Perform other duties as needed

Knowledge of community needs and human service resources.
Knowledge of individual and group behavior and of effective ways of working with people.
Knowledge of personal computers and software applications. 
Skill in presentations and public speaking.
Ability to gather, assemble, and analyze facts and prepare reports.
Ability to analyze, investigate and conciliate complaints of individuals or groups
Ability to devise solutions to problems.
Ability to exercise initiative and creativity.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to handle multiple large projects simultaneously.
Ability to identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and implement effective solutions.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships within and outside the City.
Ability to establish goals and objectives, to devise solutions to program administrative problems.

Preferred Qualification

Experience in mediation
Proficient bi-lingual skills

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in social work, sociology, or a related field, or equivalent combination of experience and training in the knowledge, skills and abilities required.

$55,980 - $69,974 

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
