Function

This position maintains and assists in repairs of mechanical equipment associated with the operation of water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, raw water pump stations, remote distribution pump stations, and sewage lift stations. 

Summary

Work involves: repairing, rebuilding and/or performing preventative maintenance on various types of pumps, valves, pipes, compressors, boilers, conveyors, etc.; maintaining buildings and grounds; cleaning up work sites and tools; and servicing equipment.  This position includes fabrication, plumbing, and welding for many different applications and maintenance of related documentation.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains and repairs mechanical equipment associated with the operation of water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, raw water pump stations, remote distribution pump stations, and sewage lift stations on a basic mechanical level.  
Makes rounds; maintains related logs.
Preforms preventive maintenance on all equipment by: visually checking equipment for signs of improper operation; checking oil levels; and looking for vibrations, noise, and leaks; and takes appropriate action.
Performs scheduled equipment maintenance; lubricates chains and sprockets; services air valves; pulls inspection covers; replaces v-belts; and checks sumps.
Starts and stops pumps and motors; operates emergency generators; 
Conducts monthly inspections on vehicles, power tools, folk lifts, crane truck, stationary cranes, and safely retrieval systems.
Maintains related records including hours worked; chemicals and materials used.
Assists with the rebuilding, repairing, or replacing equipment by working with other mechanics to troubleshoot equipment; gathers proper tools and parts.
Cleans-up work site.
Performs other building maintenance (such as replacing lights, broken windows) and grounds maintenance (such as weed spraying and taking out trash).
Follows related safety regulations.
Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of computerized maintenance management software.
Knowledge of operating and repairing related equipment.
Knowledge of municipal waste water and certain chemicals.
Skill in working with mechanical, welding, and plumbing tools.
Ability to obtain a City driving permit.
Ability to follow safety regulations

Preferred Qualification

Requires valid driver’s license.
Requires obtaining level 1 certification within 18 months of hire.
Desires NC AWWA-WEA Maintenance Technologist certification.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED from an accredited school; desires college courses in a related field.

Two (2) years of related maintenance work experience.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
