Summary

In working to put communities and citizens first, the City of Charlotte’s Department of Planning, Design, and Development is committed to creating great places. The Department of Planning, Design, and Development is chiefly responsible for collaborating with community partners, guiding growth, sustaining the natural environment while also designing vibrant and inclusive avenues for citizen enjoyment.

The City of Charlotte’s Urban Design Center is looking for a Planner and Urban Designer with experience in urban design principles, practices, and their application to the community. This position will be very collaborative, working across City teams and projects that focus on placemaking and urban design. This position provides support to the Urban Design Center, including co-leading placemaking projects, providing design guidance on capital projects, and assisting planning processes.  

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Provides support on projects to the Urban Design Center 
Co-lead Placemaking projects and manage moderate budgets from design through construction 
Provide design guidance to city Capital Projects 
Work with other Departments on major initiatives where placemaking is concerned (e.g., corridors of opportunities, strategic mobility plan, etc.)
Assist as needed on urban design projects and Corridors of Opportunity Playbooks 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Demonstrated experience in urban design principles, practices, and their applicability to the community
Experience working with design and development professionals 
Ability to collaborate within internal and external organizations
Experience in presenting and working with diverse audiences and all segments of the City’s population.
Proficient skills in all Adobe Suite products, ArcGIS, and SketchUp, as well as Microsoft Word. 

Preferred Qualification

Master’s Degree in Planning, Architecture, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Science or related degree.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Architecture, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Science or related degree. 

Three years (3) years of urban design experience in multiple areas of practice (notably urban design, public space planning, placemaking, policy planning and implementation).  


Salary

$61,718 - $74,000 Commensurate with Experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
