Summary


This position serves as Heavy Equipment Technician for the Aviation Department.  Performs skilled maintenance work primarily on both diesel and electric buses, trucks, tractors, and other standard and special automotive equipment operated by the Aviation Department.

General Information:
Ideal candidate will possess a valid Class B CDL driver’s license with passenger endorsement. If candidate does not have CDL, CLT Airport will provide training.
Certain convictions within a 10-year period would prevent unescorted access and therefore deny employment.
Vehicle Maintenance Facility offers heated and cooled work area with good lighting and other facility amenities
Hours are 4 days per week (Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday) 6:00AM – 4:00PM. With a rotating weekend day once per month. Subject to work at other times and emergency calls back to work.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

 1. Under direction and guidance of a senior technician, assists with the inspection of vehicle systems for mechanical damage and needed maintenance
2. Completes basic preventative maintenance independently, on Buses (80%) and Light Equipment such as Vans, Pick-up Trucks, and passenger vehicles (20%).  PMs  include: 
o Oil and Filter Change. 
o Brake Replacement
o Chassis Lubrication
o Replace Transmission Fluid
o Cleaning Radiator
o Replace Fuel Filter
o Drain and Replace Axle Gear Oil
o Repack Wheel Hub
o Safety and OBDII Inspections
3. Assists in the diagnosis and repair by completing minor removal and replacement of failed components on the vehicle’s body and/or auxiliary systems. 
4. Must exhibit the basic knowledge of different vehicle/equipment systems and have demonstrated experience in the completion of basic preventative maintenance activities. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Intermediate knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in maintaining and repairing automotive and related equipment.
Basic knowledge of the operating principles of engines and mechanical components of automotive equipment.
Familiarity with safe working practices and hazard communication standard.
Basic ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment and to perform routine mechanical repairs independently.
Ability to perform and knowledge of shop arithmetic.
Ability to prepare and maintain work records and routine reports.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in all types of automotive repair work.
Computer literacy required.

Physical Requirements:
This is a physically active job requiring manual dexterity, physical strength and the ability to lift 50 lbs. without assistance, and the ability to manipulate heavier weights up to 100 lbs. with assistance.  Physical activity may include stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.  Exposure to noise, heat, dust, cold, fumes, uneven surfaces, chemical substances likely, and adverse weather conditions.

Preferred Qualification

Post-secondary education in a related technical field preferred.  ASE certifications are preferred as well.

One year related work experience

High School Graduate or Equivalent
