Summary

Assists with the development and application of the Metrolina Regional Travel Demand Model. Prepares travel demand forecasts and conducts detailed analyses of transportation demand and performance in a team setting using transportation modeling, air quality modeling, and geographic information systems software and databases. Performs computer programming related to travel demand modeling.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Produce regional, multi-county travel demand forecasts for long-range planning and air quality analysis purposes.  Produce and review travel forecasts for highway and transit projects using TransCAD and STOPS software. 
  • Assist with sub-area model development and analysis. 
  • Perform transportation scenario analyses on a wide array of projects including corridor studies, highway or transit projects, and connectivity or land use studies using TransCAD, TransModeler, and CommunityViz software. 
  • Provide written and verbal technical analyses, reports, and recommendations. 
  • Edit macros and computer programs (FORTRAN, C++, GISDK) for the regional travel demand model.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • TransCAD, CUBE or other modeling software 
  • Knowledge of theory, principles and practices of urban and transportation planning, including the ability to apply transportation models, prepare travel demand projections and provide technical modeling support. 
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of travel demand forecasting and their relationship to long-range transportation planning and air quality conformity. 
  • Ability to systematically solve problems individually and collaboratively. 
  • Ability to manage projects, maintain schedules, and communicate complex, technical work to a non-technical audience.

Preferred Qualification

• American Institute of Certified Planners or Engineer Intern designation with eligibility to sit for the Professional Engineers exam within two (2)years is desirable.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering, transportation or urban planning, or related field and three (3) years of relevant work experience
  • Master's Degree and one (1) year of relevant work experience
  • an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties.

  • $71,445.00 - $89,307.00/Year; Commensurate with experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
