Summary

This position is responsible for direct supervision for a Sign Installation crew with all job functions. This position is responsible for installing and maintaining all ground mounted traffic-related and specialty signage for the City of Charlotte. This position operates in a fast-paced team environment. This position works primarily in the Sign Installation Section, however if needed, may be assigned work in other sections or specialized projects.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Perform direct daily supervision of sign crew activities including training, coaching, documenting, and providing performance reviews.
  2. Perform routine maintenance on sign equipment and assets.
  3. Complete an accurate daily record within the Work & Access Management system to document labor, equipment, and materials.
  4. Interpret works orders, blueprints, sketches, and other related documents to complete work accurately.
  5. Responsible for the installation and maintenance of Traffic Control signs.
  6. Operate and maintain assets including but not limited to: vehicle, specialized equipment, tools, and materials.
  7. Set up temporary work zones and perform work in medians.
  8. Follow oral and written instructions.
  9. Work in a team environment.
  10. Work in all weather conditions.
  11. Perform related work as required.

  • Ability to lead and motivate a diverse staff
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems related to the installation and maintenance of traffic signs with limited supervision from Field Operations Supervisor or Labor Crew Chief II.    
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to use specialized equipment (i.e., bucket truck, hydraulic drills, chain jacks, strap jacks, lashing machines, air compressor, core drill, bucket buddy, volt meter, voltage tester, soldering irons, heat guns) and hand tools used in traffic operations.  
  • Ability to work as a team, and lead crew members on various task and projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret prints provided by traffic engineers.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices for the installation, operation and maintenance of traffic signal and supporting systems.
  • Knowledge on the MUTCD and Nationals Electrical Manufacture’s Association and National Electric Code standards for signal equipment. 
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions involved with working in and around heavy vehicle traffic.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and Work & Access Management system

Preferred Qualification

  • Experience with work hazards, safety precautions, and OSHA regulations preferred. 
  • Computer experience is preferred including desktop computer or tablet. Examples of preferred computer experience include but are not limited to: Work Order Management System, Cityworks, data entry, spreadsheets, Word documents.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent and three (3) years relevant work experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties

Salary

  • $37,888.00 - $47,360.00/Year; Commensurate with experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
